DSU defeats University of Great Falls 66-63 in a physical battle, as senior forward Johnie Sanders explodes for 14 points.

Sander's 13 of 14 points came in the second half Thursday.

"Coach told me to shoot the ball on the bench because I was not being aggressive enough," said Sanders.

Sander's first field goal came with 12:19 in the second half. At 6:17 one of his baskets gave the Blue Hawks the lead they would never relinquish.

Four field goals came from Sanders in a two minute span. With 5:02 to play Sander's fourth field goal in that span gave the Blue Hawks a five point lead.

"I started pulling up and making shots, but when I banked my first shot, I was feeling it and I couldn't stop," said Sanders.

Reserve junior guard Ty Ackelson changed the game in his 26 minutes off the bench. Ackelson went 5/9 from the field for 16 points. Ackelson also provided tough on ball defense to the physical Great Falls guards.

"It was very physical but we stuck to the game plan. We boxed out, without Jarek and Johnie boxing out we wouldn't have won it," said Ackelson.

The Hawks found themselves down by five after another Sanders field goal with eight minutes to play. Ackelson intercepted the pass underneath the basket and laid it in which was a huge momentum play for DSU.

"Ty's steal; he was a spark tonight and our bench play was huge. They just relaxed and played," said DSU head men's basketball coach Ty Orton

Senior forward Jarek Hansen. went 6/13 off the bench for 16 points.

With nine seconds to go Hansen was put on the line, with DSU up by three. Hansen made his second of two free-throws, which is uncharacteristic for one of the nation's best free throw shooter. With seven seconds to go, Great Falls guard TJ Harris hit a deep three to cut the DSU lead to one. Ackelson was then put on the line where he hit both free throws to get the three point win.

Senior guard John Hanstad also added three 3-pnt. field goals.

The Blue Hawks will have their season finale Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against MSU – Northern on senior night.
