Men's Wrestling - Tue, Mar. 5, 2013

The Dickinson State University wrestling team had an outstanding tournament this past weekend in Des Moines, IA.  The Hawks came into the year with a preseason ranking of 10thand ended the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament with a 4th place finish.

The Blue Hawks were led by their five All-America performers; Junior Bryden Lazaro, Junior Jesse Hellinger, Senior Cameron Schrempp, Senior Jose Lopez, and Senior Brad Steele.

Both Cameron Schrempp and Jose Lopez finished their wrestling careers with a win taking third-place respectively.   Schrempp beat Montana State-Northern's Max Payne in the third-place match with a 6-1 decision.  Lopez ended his career with a pin over Austin Lobsinger from Simpson College.

Beach, ND native, Brad Steele, ended his outstanding Dickinson State career with an All-America award placing 8th overall.  Steele lost two very close matches by a one-point margin in the wrestlebacks.  Steele lost to Chris Hart of Wayland Baptist in the seventh-place match (4-3).

Juniors Bryden Lazaro and Jesse Hellinger both made the finals Saturday evening in Des Moines, IA.  Lazaro lost in his championship match to Mitchell Lofstedt of Southern Oregon.  Lofstedt won his third consecutive 125-pound match.  Hellinger fell by decision (8-4) to Jameel Bryant of Lindsey Wilson.  Hellinger made a huge improvement from last year after not placing last year.

The other three Blue Hawks that made the NAIA National Tournament were Sean Elkins, Tyler Johnson, and Kevin Keisler.  This was the first time in Thadd O'Donnell's coaching era that every Dickinson State wrestler scored points at nationals.

After all of the athletic accomplishments at NAIA Nationals, the most impressive award might have been the Team Sportsmanship Award that Dickinson State received.
