Megan Klein & Sean Elkins named 2016-17 Senior of the Year Awards

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Athletic Department is pleased to announce Megan Klein has been named Loraine C. Schumacher Senior Female Athlete of the Year and Sean Elkins has been named Harry J. Weinbergen Senior Male Athlete of the Year.

LORAINE C. SCHUMACHER AWARD

The Loraine C. Schumacher Award is presented annually to the outstanding female athlete of the year at Dickinson State University.  As a long time professor of Physical Education at Dickinson State University with specialties in dance and swimming, Loraine Schumacher was always a strong advocate of women in sport.  Loraine received many honors as a leader in promoting Physical Education in North Dakota and the surrounding region.

Loraine passed away on March 15, 1986.  It is in her honor that we present the 2016-17 Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year Award to a Dickinson State University.

Megan Klein was a two time 1st Team NSAA All-Conference Selection, a member of two national tournament qualifying teams, a two time All-American selection and a two time NSAA Defensive Player of the Year.

She holds the DSU Career Rebounding Record of 1,061 (which she did in 3 years) and lead the NAIA in rebounds her senior year.

Megan is a Psychology Major from Killdeer, ND.

HARRY J. WIENBERGEN AWARD

The Harry J. Wienbergen Award is presented annually to the outstanding male athlete of the year at Dickinson State University.  From 1927 until his retirement in 1966, Harry Wienbergen served as teacher, coach and athletic director at Dickinson State University.  He was known as a gentleman with high moral and ethical standards and believed strongly in true sportsmanship on his teams. It is in his honor that we present the 2016-17 Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year award to an outstanding senior who has represented Dickinson State University with talent, humility and sportsmanship.

Sean Elkins was a three time National Tournament Qualifier, an NAIA All-American Selection in 2015 and placed 3rd in NAIA National Tournament 2015.

Elkins suffered an almost career ending injury in 2016 and came back in 2017 and qualified for his 3rd NAIA National Tournament.

Sean is from Hebron, ND and is a Dean List's Recipient Majoring in Composite Social Science Education with a History focus.
