ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Blue Hawks took both games of their doubleheader against Presentation College on Saturday (Apr. 12) in North Star action. The Blue Hawks captured the victory in game one with a score of 12-7, before taking game two 8-6. Dickinson State is now 9-29 on the season and 5-7 in North Star competition.
In the top of the third inning the Saints got into trouble. Contreras was hit by a pitch and thenChris Mjelstad drew a walk. Ryan Risse loaded the bases with a single. Eric Seiler walked and forced in Miles O'Donnell, who pinch ran for Contreras. After a pair of fielder's choices Taft walked with the bases loaded to score Seiler and give the Blue Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Saints picked up a pair of runs in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the top of the fourth Mjelstad singled to score Tescher. Thad Lane later singled to drive home O'Donnell. Binstock laced a single to plate Mjelstad. Taft singled and scored Seiler. Caleb Burgard reached via a fielder's choice to score Lane, giving the Blue Hawks an 8-2 lead.
The fifth inning saw more offense from the Blue Hawks. Contreras doubled to lead off. Mjelstad then singled, but Contreras was tagged out at third. Risse singled and Seiler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mjelstad then stole home. Binstock singled to right to drive in both Risse and Seiler.
Presentation plated five runs in the sixth inning on four hits and one error, bringing the score to 11-7.
The Blue Hawks' final run came in the top of the seventh. Lane reached first on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sam Bisson roped a double that scored Lane.
Contreras went all seven innings for Dickinson State. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. He struck out 10 hitters. Taft drove in a pair of runs. Burgard, Contreras, Mjelstad, Bisson, Seiler, and Lane each had a run batted in. Binstock plated three runs.
In the backend of the doubleheader the Blue Hawks opened the scoring with a crooked number in the second inning.
Mjelstand singled and then stole second. Risse reached on a walk. After a fielder's choiceJeff VanCleave walked to load the bases. Binstock was then hit by a pitch to force in Risse. Taft reached via an error, which allowed Burgard to score. Jake Coyle followed with a double that scored both VanCleave and Binstock. Contreras would later single to left to score Taft and give the Blue Hawks a 5-0 lead.
Presentation would cut the deficit to one with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Ryan Baldanado would even the score in the bottom of the third with a solo blast.
In the top of the fourth Dickinson State pushed across three runs. Coyle reached on a leadoff hit by pitch. Jordan Tescher then laced a ground rule double to put runners on second and third. Contreras doubled to score both Coyle and Tescher. Mjelstad followed him with a single to score Contreras and give the Blue Hawks an 8-5 lead.
The Saints added a run in the seventh to bring the score to 8-6.
Tim Catalano tossed 6.1 innings to record the win. He allowed six runs on 11 hits, while striking out four hitters. Ian Anderson recorded his fourth save of the season. Contreras raked in three RBIs on two hits. Mjelstad had three hits and one RBI. Coyle had a hit and two RBIs. Both VanCleave and Taft each had a run driven in.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on April 16, when they host the University of Jamestown in a North Star Athletic Conference doubleheader.
