Hastings sweeps Dickinson State

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks were swept by Hastings College on Sunday (Mar. 16) in a doubleheader.  Hastings took the games 12-6 and 9-6.  Dickinson State is now 3-13 on the season.

Hastings jumped out early with three in the first inning and four in the second.

Dickinson State pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the first, when Jordan Teschersingled to score Joe Binstock

The Blue Hawks would strike again in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Austin Taft led off with a single.  Sam Bisson drew a walk to put two runners on.  Caleb Burgard singled to load the bases with no outs.  Binstock singled to score Taft.  Eric Seiler reached on a fielder's choice, but Bisson scored.  Eric Contreras singled to left-center to drive home the third run of the inning and narrow the deficit to 7-4.

Hastings' offense went back to work and tallied twice in the fifth and once in both the sixth and seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh Dickinson State two more on the board.  Bisson reached on a one out walk, followed by a single from Burgard.  With runners on the corners Binstock took a hit by pitch to load them up.  Bisson scored on a passed ball and a single by Contreras drove in Burgard. 

Binstock was 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a run scored.  Contreras was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.  Tescher had a hit and a RBI.  Chris Mjelstad went 3-for-5.  Burgard picked up three hits and scored twice.  Jordan Yussman was charged with the loss.  He surrendered 10 runs, eight earned, on ten hits over six innings.

In the second game the Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning whenJeff VanCleave brought home Binstock with a single. 

Hastings picked up three in the bottom half of the inning, powered by three hits with two outs, to grab a 3-1 lead.

Ryan Risse tripled with one out in the top of the second and pinch runner Seth Flynn scored on a single from Burgard, cutting the deficit to 3-2.

Hastings picked up another run in the third to make the game 4-2. 

In the top half of the fourth Risse reached via catcher's interference and would eventually score on a throwing error to cut Hastings' lead to 4-3, before Hastings added another to pull ahead 5-3.

VanCleave singled to center with one away in the fifth inning, as did Mjelstad.  A wild pitch put runners on second and third.  After a strikeout, Risse reached on a walk to load the bases.  Bisson struck out swinging, but the ball squirted away from Hastings' catcher Xavier Schmidt and allowed VanCleave to score.

Hastings knocked in four in the bottom of the fifth, expanding their lead to 9-4.

In the top of the sixth the Blue Hawks' offense went back to work.  Binstock led off with a single.  Seiler also singled.  Contreras loaded the bases with a sharp single.  VanCleave reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Binstock to score and cut the deficit to 9-5.  Mjelstad grounded out, but scored from third.  Hastings was able to avoid any further damage and hang on 9-6.

Binstock went 3-for-5, scored twice, and drove one run in.  VanCleave went 2-for-4, with two RBIs and a run scored.  Seiler tossed four innings, allowed seven runs, and seven hits.  He also struck out six hitters.  The Blue Hawks finished with 11 hits and six stolen bases.

Dickinson State will be back on the field Monday Mar. 17) when they play Westmont.
