DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks dropped their first two games in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday (Mar. 15) to Concordia (Neb.). Dickinson State fell 16-3 in game one and 6-1 in game two. The Blue Hawks are now 3-11 on the season.
Tim Catalano got the start in game one and threw four innings. He scuffled in the fourth inning, before being replaced by Ian Anderson. Catalano surrendered six runs on seven hits, with one strikeout.
Concordia put up two runs in the first, one in the third, three runs in both the fifth and sixth, before exploding with seven runs in the seventh.
Dickinson State struck twice in the third. A leadoff walk drawn by Austin Taft set up a one-out single from Joe Binstock to score the Blue Hawks' first run. Jordan Tescher walked to load the bases with one away. After a fielder's choice Eric Contreras singled home Caleb Burgardfrom third. The Blue Hawks picked up another run in the bottom of the fourth when pinch runner Sam Bisson scored on an error by Andrew Yerrell.
Game two starter Jeff VanCleave went 4.2 innings. He scattered four runs on four hits and struck out one hitter.
Concordia opened the scoring in the second on a single from Camaren Gause. They would tally twice more in the bottom of the third. Both runs in the third came with two outs. Alex Cargin singled and was driven in by Cole Stuerkle, who tripled. Stuerkle then scored on a wild pitch to give Concordia a 3-0 lead. Concorda would put up a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
The Blue Hawks lone run was pushed across top of the sixth inning. Tescher reached on a wild throw by Cargin with one down. After a lineout, Mjelstad singled to drive home Tescher from second.
Binstock, Eric Seiler, Contreras, and Burgard each had one hit. Mjelstad was 2-for-3 with the lone RBI.
The Blue Hawks will look to end their skid on Sunday (Mar. 16) when they take on Hastings College in a doubleheader.
