Blue Hawks split with Valley City

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks split their conference opening doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 29) to Valley City State.  Chris Mjelstad drove in three runs in game two, while Ryan Rissenotched a solo blast in game one.  Dickinson State took game one 6-4, but feel in game two 23-8.

Valley City opened the first with two runs on a home run by Cole Honl.  Dickinson State would get both runs back and more in the second inning.

Mjelstad singled and moved to second on a single from Jeff VanCleave.  Thad Lane laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a throwing error by starting pitcher Bryce Venaas. Caleb Burgard doubled to drive in to drive in all three runners.  Eric Seiler drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Hawks a 4-2 lead.

Honl added another round tripper to his stat sheet in the top of the third to tie the game at 4-4. 

In the bottom of the fourth inning Risse hit a solo bomb to left-center, brining the score to 5-4 and a one run advantage. 

In the sixth inning the Blue Hawks added a little insurance.  Burgard singled and stole second.  He was driven in by Risse who singled through the hole at second base.

Eric Contreras went the distance and allowed just four runs on four hits.  Burgard notched three runs batted in on a pair of hits.  He also scored a run.  Risse had two RBIs.  Seiler drove in a run and collected two hits.

The Blue Hawks pitching staff labored in game two.  The Vikings tallied runs in every inning except the second.  Honl had four RBIs.  Brady Anderson went 4-for-5 with a homerun and eight runs driven in.  Tom Houdek and Anthony Necochea each had four runs driven in. 

Austin Taft was 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Contreras went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  He also drove in one run.  Mjelstad had three hits and three runs driven in.  Jordan Tescher drove in a pair with three hits.  Burgard and Lane each had one run driven in.

The Blue Hawks will be back on the field Sunday (Mar. 30) when they host Valley City in a doubleheader.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
