DICKINSON, N.D. – The Marauders picked up a pair of wins over the Blue Hawks on Monday (Apr. 21). In game one the University of Mary picked up a 7-6 victory. The Marauders scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to down the Blue Hawks 6-5 in the back end of the doubleheader. Dickinson State is now 9-35 overall.
The Blue Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Jordan Tescher singled through the left side to get the two-out rally started. Eric Contreras ripped a double to deep left to put runners on second and third. Chris Mjelstad singled up the middle to drive home Tescher and put runners on the corner. Ryan Risse roped a double to drive in a pair of runners and give the Blue Hawks an early 3-0 lead.
Dwight Mack got two runs back in the top of the second with a homerun to right field, cutting the deficit to one.
The scoring remained quiet until the top of the fourth. The Marauders pushed across five runs on six hits to stake out a 7-3 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Caleb Burgard scored Risse on a ground out to bring the Blue Hawks within three. In the fifth Contreras singled and was brought home by Mjelstad's triple, bringing Dickinson State within two runs.
Nicholas Stobbe came on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning. A one-out double by Taft put the Blue Hawks within striking distance. Taft moved to third on a bobble by Austin Grundstad. Thad Lane hit a deep fly to left-center field to score Taft and move Dickinson State to a one-run deficit.
Travis Famias came on for the Marauders in the bottom of the seventh. Contreras singled with one-out to put the tying run aboard. Famias got back-to-back outs to quell the rally and preserve the 7-6 lead.
Contreras finished with three hits and he scored twice. Mjelstad had a pair of hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. Risse also drove in a pair. Burgard notched a pair of hits. Brendan Hardaway went the full seven innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits.
Chas Allen got the start for the Blue Hawks in the second game.
Once again the Blue Hawks opened the scoring early. Austin Taft led off with a hit by pitch. A wild pitch by Mary starter Brad Horan moved Taft to second. Burgard drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Horan attempted to pick off Burgard at first, but his throw went wide. Taft came home to score, while Burgard advanced to third. Tescher singled up the middle to give the Blue Hawks a 2-0 lead. Contreras singled through the left side, putting runners on the corners. Mjelstad hit a fly to deep left-center to score Tescher for a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the top of the third inning Mack doubled to drive in Derek Somerville, cutting the Blue Hawks' lead to 3-1.
The Blue Hawks wasted no time getting the run back. Tescher doubled with one out and advanced to third on a fly ball from Contreras to deep center. Mjelstad singled to center to drive in Tescher, bringing Dickinson State's lead back to three.
The Blue Hawks and the Marauders traded runs again the fourth inning. Alex Deyle singled to score Ingemansen. In the bottom half of the inning Lane doubled to score Jeff VanCleave, who scored earlier.
A sacrifice fly by Mason Schiff in the fifth inning cut the Blue Hawks lead back down to 5-3.
In the top of the seventh inning Ian Anderson came on to close the door. Grundstad reached on a walk. Scott Held then drew a walk. Jason Shaul laid a bunt down the third base line and reached on a single to load the bases. Somerville drew a bases loaded walk to force in Grundstad. Tyler Kraenzel then came on to pitch. Mack worked a walk and forced in Held. Schiff hit into his second sacrifice fly to score Shaul. Kraenzel then forced Andrew Beyer into an inning ending double play when he lined to short. Somerville was doubled off at second attempting to return to base. The damage was done, as the Marauders took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Zach Stecker came on to record the save for the Marauders. Eric Seiler picked up a pinch hit single through the right side to leadoff. Burgard sacrificed him over with a bunt. Tescher grounded back to the mound and Seiler moved to third. Stecker dueled with Contreras and got him swinging to end the game.
Tescher had two hits and two runs scored. He also drove in a run. Mjelstad recorded two RBIs. Lane had one hit and one run driven in. Allen went six innings, allowed 11 hits, and three runs. Anderson recorded the loss, allowing three runs.
Dickinson State will be back on the field Saturday (Apr. 26) when they head to Jamestown, N.D. for a North Star doubleheader.
