Walk-off single beats Blue Hawks, 7-6

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Blue Hawks (No. 5 seed) fell in their opening game of the NAIA Unaffiliated North Star/Frontier Baseball Conference Tournament.  John Pistukla scored on a single by John Cahill in the bottom of the ninth to give the Mayville State Comets (No. 2 seed) a 7-6 victory.  Dickinson State is now 10-39 on the season and 0-1 in the tournament.

After the Comets put up three in the bottom of the first Dickinson State responded with big numbers in the second.

Eric Seiler ripped a one-out solo homerun to cut the deficit to two.  Joe Binstock singled homeCaleb Burgard.  Jordan Tescher hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jeff VanCleave.  Jake Coylethen laced a two-out double to score Binstock.  Eric Contreras finished the scoring with a two-run shot to center field.

That was all the offense Dickinson State would get.  Mayville added three in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6.

In the bottom of the ninth inning Spencer Kidder left off with a single through the left side.  Pistukla singled to right field to put two runners aboard with no outs.  Kidder was thrown out on a grounder by Taylor Skytland for the inning's first out.  Cahill slapped a single right-center field and Pistukla rounded third for home.  He scored and gave the Comets a 7-6 victory.

Chas Allen was charged with the loss.  He went 2.1 innings in relief and allowed just one unearned run.  Contreras had two RBIs on his homerun.  Tescher, Coyle, Seiler, and Binstock each picked up a RBI.  Six different Blue Hawks scored.  Dickinson State finished with five hits.

The Blue Hawks will now play Presentation College (No. 6 seed), who is 0-1, on Saturday (May 3) at 11 a.m.
