MINOT, N.D. – Dickinson State played a pair of games Sunday (Mar. 5) against conference opponent Dakota State University. The Trjoans took game one by a 14-3 score, before taking game two 6-4. The Blue Hawks are now 5-27 overall and 1-7 in North Star games.
In the first game of the doubleheader Dakota State put up four crooked innings. They plated three in the first, two in the third, four in the sixth, and five in the seventh.
The Blue Hawks three runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jeff VanCleave doubled down the left field line to score Jordan Tescher. Thad Lane followed him with a double that drove home both Sam Bisson and VanCleave, bringing the score to 9-3.
Eric Seiler got the start and allowed three runs on four hits. Lane had one hit and two runs driven in. VanCleave was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored. He also drove in a run.
In game two the Trojans opened the scoring early. They put up two runs in the top half of the first inning.
The Blue Hawks struck back in the bottom of the inning. Caleb Burgard reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild throw. He then moved up to third on a wild pitch. Eric Contreras singled down the left field line to score Burgard and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Trojans added a run in the second and two more in the fifth before Dickinson State would tally again.
A leadoff single by Lane in the bottom of the fifth was followed by a singly from Bisson. Austin Taft walked to load the bases. Burgard singled to left to drive home Lane.
The Trojans would add one more run in the seventh to create a 6-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Blue Hawks' bats would create a chance. Bisson singled to right-center to leadoff. Taft followed him with a single of his own. Burgard then singled to load the bases. Tescher grounded into a fielder's choice, but he was able to score Bisson. With two outs and two on, Chris Mjelstad singled to shallow right to score Taft and draw the score to 6-4.
Burgard recorded two hits and a run batted in. He also scored a run. Tescher, Contreras, and Mjelstad each drove in a run. Mjelstad had a pair of hits. Tim Catalano got the start and allowed five runs on eight hits.
The Blue Hawks will be back on the field on Tuesday (Apr. 8) when they travel to Billings, Mont. to take on Montana State University-Billings. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
