MINOT, N.D. – The Blue Hawks dropped a pair of games to Dakota State University on Saturday (Apr. 5). The games were initially scheduled to be played in Dickinson, N.D. before being moved to Minot, N.D. Dakota State took game one, 3-2, before claiming game two, 9-3. Dickinson State is now 5-25 on the year and 1-5 in North Star play.
Eric Contreras got the call in game one for the Blue Hawks.
In the bottom of the first inning the Blue Hawks posted the game's first runs. A two out double by Chris Mjelstad brought home Austin Taft and pinch runner Miles O'Donnell, giving Dickinson State a 2-0 lead.
Both offenses were quiet until Dakota State struck in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles were followed by a sacrifice bunt for the innings first out. Ryan Schlesser pinch hit for Seth Spears and slapped a single to right field, scoring Danny Flahie and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Ian Anderson then come on in relief of Contreras. A wild pitch plated the game tying run. Drew Sweeter singled to score Schlesser and give Dakota State a 3-2 lead. Dakota State would hold on for the win.
Contreras went 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out seven hitters. Joe Binstock had one hit and scored a run. Mjelstad picked up two hits and drove in a pair.
In game two Brendan Hardaway took the mound for the Blue Hawks.
Dakota State's offense got to work early, plating four runs in the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning Dickinson State pushed back with two runs of their own.
Jordan Tescher doubled home Taft. Tescher would later score on an error by Nathan Wieneke.
Dakota State would add two runs in the second and one in the third to grab an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Dickinson State would strike again. Ryan Risse reached on an error and advance to third on a fly-out. Thad Lane looped a single to shallow right and drove home Risse, cutting the score to 8-3.
Dakota State would tally once more, to bring the score to 9-3.
Hardaway labored over two innings. He surrendered eight runs, nine hits, and struck out one. Taft finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Binstock tallied two hits. Tescher notched a hit and a run scored, as well as a run batted in. Mjelstad and Lane each had a RBI.
The Blue Hawks will be back on the field Sunday (Mar. 6) when they host Dakota State for the final two games of the series in Minot, N.D.
