DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks were swept in a doubleheader by Doane College on Sunday (Mar. 9). Dickinson State dropped game one, 5-2, and game two by a score of 11-1. The Blue Hawks are 3-6 overall on the season.
Nicholas Kearley got the call in game one and went up against Doane starter Brandon Stennis.
Doane got things going in the bottom of the first with a Nick Studer single that scored Kevin Clausen. In the bottom of the second Doane tallied again, this time on a double from Jake Smith. Smith's double scored John Derr from first.
The Blue Hawks put their first run on the board in the top of the third. Chris Mjelstad doubled to left center field to lead things off. After Thad Lane drew a walk Austin Taft sacrificed the runners over to put runners on second and third with just one down. Joe Binstock hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Mjelstad to make it a 2-1 ballgame.
Doane got the run back and more in the bottom of the third. Clausen led off with a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Kearley managed to force Andres Rivera to ground out, followed by getting Studer to strike out. Alex Arkfeld clubbed a two-out double to drive Clausen home and extend Doane's lead to 3-1. Dylan Matthews walked to put runners on first and second with two down. Derr singled through to shallow center to load the bases. A two-out bases loaded walk drawn by Smith forced Arkfeld home and gave Doane a 4-1 advantage. Kearley got out of the jam with a strikeout of Zach Lain.
The Blue Hawks got one back in the top of the fourth. Jordan Tescher drew a leadoff walk andEric Contreras singled to left. Jeff VanCleave moved the runners over to put runners on second and third with just one out. After a strike out Tescher scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
Doane would add one run in the fifth for a 5-2 advantage.
Kearley surrendered five runs, four earned, over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven hitters. Binstock had the lone RBI for the Blue Hawks. Tescher and Mjelstad each scored.
The back end of the doubleheader was not kind to Dickinson State. Starter Tim Catalano (0-1) was tapped for eight runs, six earned, over six innings of work and charged with the loss.
The Blue Hawks put up their lone run in the first on a double from Contreras that knocked in Taft.
Doane put up crooked numbers in the first, second, and seventh innings. Austin Caspersen threw a complete game and allowed one run on three hits, with 11 strikeouts.
Dickinson State will be back in action on Monday (Mar. 10) when they play Peru State in a doubleheader.
