DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks split games on Thursday (Mar. 20) against Doane College and Grace University. Dickinson State picked up a 9-7 victory over Doane and fell 9-2 against Grace University. The Blue Hawks are now 4-17 on the season.
Doane opened up the first with a big inning. Doane sent five runs across the plate to stake out a quick 5-0 lead.
The Blue Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Joe Binstock laced a one out single to center field. Following a strikeout, Chris Mjelstad laced a double to right-center that scored Binstock.
Doane would add a run in the third to bring the score to 6-1.
Once again, the Blue Hawks would respond. Binstock reached on a dropped fly ball and was followed by Jeff VanCleave, who drew a walk. Binstock advanced to third on a flyout. Sam Bisson reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Binstock to score and cut the deficit to four.
Dickinson State put up a crooked number in the fourth to tie the game. Seth Flynn reached on a one out walk. Miles O'Donnell came in to run for Flynn. Caleb Burgard then singled. With two outs VanCleave ripped a double down the right field line to score O'Donnell and put Burgard on third. Mjelstad was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aaron O'Dowd threw a wild pitch that scored Burgard and allowed both Mjelstad and VanCleave to advance. Bisson then singled to shallow right to plate both runners, tying the game at 6-6.
The Blue Hawks' offense went back to work the next inning. Jordan Tescher reached on a walk after Thad Lane singled. Lane was forced out on a fielder's choice. Binstock doubled to deep left field that plated Tescher and moved Chad Mosbrucker to third. O'Donnell pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mjelstad drew a walk to force home Mosbrucker. Dickinson State took an 8-6 lead into the sixth.
Doane added one in the sixth, but it would not be enough as the Blue Hawks held on to a 9-7 victory.
Eric Seiler went seven innings for the Blue Hawks and allowed seven runs on 11 hits. He struck out eight hitters. Ian Anderson recorded his second save of the season. Anderson went two innings of scoreless relief and recorded two strikeouts. Binstock finished with three hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. Bisson drove in three runs, Mjelstad knocked in two, while VanCleave also knocked in a run. Austin Taft and Lane each had two hits.
The second game did not go as well for the Blue Hawks. Grace University defeated Dickinson State 9-2. Grace put up four runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third, and one in the seventh.
The Blue Hawks scored their first run in the bottom of the seventh. VanCleave reached on a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a double from Mjelstad. O'Donnell would drive VanCleave in with a sacrifice fly.
Dickinson State would add another run in the bottom of the ninth. Mjelstad roped a triple and was driven in by O'Donnell.
Jordan Yussman labored over three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Mjelstad notched two hits and scored a run. O'Donnell picked up one hit and drove in both runs.
The Blue Hawks will be back on the field on Friday (Mar. 21) when they play Bethesda University of California.
