Blue Hawks eliminate Valley City with 8-2 victory

VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Blue Hawks (No. 4 seed) eliminated Valley City State (No. 3 seed) from the NAIA Unaffiliated North Star Athletic Association/Frontier Baseball Conference Tournament on Sunday (May 4) by a score of 8-2.  Dickinson State is now 12-39 on the season.  Valley City finished their season with a 19-29 record.

The Blue Hawks started the run production early.  Joe Binstock led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and later scored on Jordan Tescher's fielder's choice.  Chris Mjelstaddoubled home Tescher a batter later.  Eric Seiler then drove in Mjelstad with a single, giving the Blue Hawks a 3-0 lead.

Valley City starter Mike Gershman was tagged for two more runs in the bottom of the second. Eric Contreras singled home Binstock with two outs, before Tescher singled to scoreJake Coyle and stretch the lead to 5-0.

The Vikings fought back to plate two runs on three hits in the second inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2.  Gershman was lifted to start the bottom of the third for Jaime Villarreal.  Villarreal managed to keep the Blue Hawks quiet until the bottom of the eighth. 

A one-out double by Tescher plated both Binstock and Coyle.  Mjelstad followed him with a single to center and plated Tescher. 

Brendan Hardaway got the start and tossed a complete game.  He scattered five hits, four strike outs, and two runs over the course of the game.  Binstock scored a trio of runs.  Coyle and Tescher each came around to score twice.  Tescher drove in four runs, while Mjelstad picked up a pair of RBIs.

The Blue Hawks will play Mayville State University (No. 2 seed) at 5 p.m. on Sunday in an elimination game.
