Blue Hawks Force 2nd Championship Game with Win Over Mayville

DICKINSON, N.D. - No. 6 seed Dickinson State continued its unlikely run at the North Star Athletic Association conference tournament on Monday as the Blue Hawks defeated Mayville State 10-2 to force a second championship game.

The Blue Hawks (20-30) and Comets (38-20) will meet at approximately 2:45 p.m. MT Monday in a winner-take-all game, with the champion advancing to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.

Since losing to Mayville State in the opening round, the Blue Hawks have won four straight loser-out games. Monday's loss in the first championship game was the first loss of the tournament for top seed Mayville State.

Dickinson State opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. RBI singles by Jacob Hignite and Ryan Risse, and a sacrifice fly by Jeff VanCleave gave the Blue Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Comets answered back with one run in the top of the second. Darin Stanislawski laced a 2-out double down the right field line, and then came around to score on an RBI single from Mason Swegarden to make it 3-1.

A single and two walks loaded the bases for Mayville State with one out in the top of the fourth, but Dickinson State starter Josh Schuller struck out Mason Swegarden and then got Comet leadoff hitter Zach Mihic to pop out behind home plate, ending the threat.

Dickinson State extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but missed an opportunity to add even more. The Blue Hawks made two outs on the bases in the inning, getting a runner thrown out at home trying to tag on a fly ball and having a runner thrown out trying to steal second base.

Dickinson State then broke the game wide open with a 5-run sixth inning, building a 9-1 lead. A 2-run home run by Jacob Hignite and a 2-run single by Landon Briscoe highlighted the 5-run rally.

The Comets picked up one run in the top of the seventh inning, but failed to score any more runs after having the bases loaded with one out.

Pitching on two day's rest, Schuller went the distance and was outstanding for Dickinson State as he allowed just six hits and two runs in a complete-game performance. He walked seven but was able to work out of a few jams.

Landon Briscoe had three hits and two RBIs to lead Dickinson's offense. Both Dylan Skabo and Jacob Hignite had two hits and three RBIs.

Camran Bonnema started on the mound for Dickinson and worked five innings in the loss. He allowed seven hits and six runs. Spencer Mallonee and Mason Swegarden each had a pair of hits to lead Mayville's offense.
