Blue Hawks Defeated in 2nd Championship Game

DICKINSON, N.D. - The Mayville State University baseball team made its fans wait for it, but at the end of the day Monday the Comets had delivered a North Star Athletic Association conference championship.

After losing the first championship game at the NSAA tournament – 10-2 to Dickinson State – the top-seeded Comets bounced back to claim the title with an 8-1 victory in the second championship game. Mayville State had entered the day undefeated, meaning the Blue Hawks had to beat Mayville twice to claim the title.
Mayville State will represent the North Star Athletic Association in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, running May 12-15. The NAIA Opening Round consists of 45 teams, grouped into 5-team pods at nine different locations. The winner of each double-elimination pod advances to the NAIA World Series. Pairings for the opening round will be announced Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m.
After an impressive run in the tournament that featured four straight loser-out victories, the No. 6-seeded Blue Hawks fell one win short of claiming the NSAA title on their home field.

Going on two day's rest, Tyler Leibert pitched a complete game for Mayville State, allowing just one run and eight hits in the victory.
After a leadoff single by Zach Mihic, Mayville State struck first in the top of the opening inning. Spencer Mallonee bunted Mihic to second, and then Aaron Miller delivered a 2-out RBI single to right field for a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning it was again Miller who keyed a rally for Mayville State. After John Pistulka walked with one out, Miller tripled to the right-center gap to put the Comets up 2-0. Nate Williams followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Miller to make it 3-0 Comets.
Dickinson State answered in the bottom of the inning with one run. With a runner on first and two outs, Jordan Tescher – who was named the conference Player of the Year – and Eric Seiler strung together back-to-back singles to score Landon Briscoe and cut the Comet lead to 3-1.

The Comets broke the game open in the top of the seventh. Four straight 2-out hits, including a 2-run double by Christian Berry, keyed a 4-run inning and a 7-1 lead.

Miller led the Comet offense with a 4-for-5 day, scoring two runs and driving in three. Nate Williams and Christian Berry each had two RBIs. Williams, Zach Mihic and Darin Stanislawski all had two hits each. The Comets scored their eight runs on 14 hits.

Eric Seiler and Ryan Risse each had a pair of hits in the game for Dickinson State. Seiler had the lone RBI for the Blue Hawks. Seiler started on the mound for Dickinons, which was his third pitching appearance of the tournament. He went seven inning, allowing 11 hits and seven runs. Chas Allen pitched the final two innings for Dickinson, giving up just one run on three hits.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Dickinson's Jordan Tescher was named the NSAA Player of the Year. Mayville State coach Scott Berry was named the NSAA Coach of the Year, and Mayville's Christian Berry was honored with the NSAA Champions of Character Achievement Award. Jamestown's Tanner Dahl was named Pitcher of the Year, and Jamestown's Tyler Ludlow was named Freshman of the Year.
