Blue Hawks go 3-7 in Tucson Invitational Games

TUCSON, AZ- The Dickinson State University Baseball team won three games and lost seven last week during the Tucson Invitational Games. The Blue Hawks faced some very competitive and national ranked teams from the NAIA and NCAA D2.

Game 1: Briar Cliff 13, DSU 4

Briar Cliff plated two runs in the top of the first inning while the Blue Hawks plated three in the bottom. Each team scored one run in the fourth but Briar Cliff score two in the fifth, five in the sixth and three in the seventh to win the game 13-4.

Jacob Hignite was 3-4 with two RBI, Dylan Skabo was 2-3, Austin Tennant was 2-3 with an RBI and Jeff VanCleave was 2-4. Jacob Cuch and Isaac Davis added singles in the loss.

Joey Buchanan took the loss going 4.1 innings allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with three walks and a strikeout. Garbiel Lizarraga threw 1.2 innings allowing five runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Taylor Dantini allowed three runs on four hits and Tyler Czech threw one inning allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

Game 2: Briar Cliff 2, DSU 1

Briar Cliff scored one run in the bottom of the first while the Blue Hawks plated a run in the third. Briar Cliff scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth and held off the Blue Hawks for a 2-1 win.

Dylan Skabo finished the game 2-3 while Sagan Osborne was 2-4 with an RBI. Jacob Cuch was the only other Blue Hawk to record a hit in the game.

Josh Schuller took the loss going five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Sean Getchell threw two innings allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout.

Game 3: St. Cloud (#1 NCAA D2) 19, DSU 7

The Blue Hawks plated two runs in the top of the first inning while St. Cloud scored a run in the bottom. DSU scored another run in the top of the second but St. Cloud answered with two runs in the bottom. The Blue Hawks added another run in the top of the fourth but St. Cloud added six runs in the bottom of the fourth as well as the bottom of the fifth. DSU scored two in the top of the sixth while St. Cloud added four in the bottom. DSU added one run in the top of the seventh but fell to St. Cloud 19-7.

Ryan Mitchell was 2-3 while Austin Tennant was 2-4. Dylan Skabo went 1-2 with a double and three RBI and Sagan Osborne added a double and two RBI. Jake Young and Tyler Czech added a hit and an RBI while Jacob Cuch and Jeff VanCleave recorded a hit in the loss.

Tony Roberts took the loss going 3.1 innings allowing nine runs (eight earned) on five hits with eight walks and two strikeouts. Sean Getchell allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and a strikeout, Jonathan Koessl allowed three runs on five hits with a strikeout in one inning pitched and Tyler Czech threw one inning allowing four runs on five hits with a walk.

Game 4: St. Cloud (#1 NCAA D2) 10, DSU 3

The Blue Hawks struggled defensively committing four errors which led to a huge nine run inning by St. Cloud in the third inning. St. Cloud plated another run in the third while the Blue Hawks scored three runs in the sixth but fell to St. Cloud 10-3.

Jacob Hignite was 2-3 with a double while Jeff VanCleave added a two RBI single. Jacob Cuch recorded a hit and an RBI while Jake Young added a single in the loss.

Travis Rowe took the loss going 2.2 innings allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout. Jason Thibault threw 2.1 innings allowing one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Gabriel Lizarraga threw one inning allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout while Austin Tennant threw one inning allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

Game 5: DSU 10, Southern Vermont 5

The Blue Hawks scored one run in the top of the first but Southern Vermont scored on run in the bottom on a two-out pass ball to tie the game. DSU plated five runs in the top of the fifth but S. Vermont put up four runs on the bottom after a two-out error by the Blue Hawks. Dickinson State added another four runs in the top of the seventh to earn their first win of the trip 10-5.

The Blue Hawks tallied 15 hits in the game led by Austin Tennant's 3-4 with an RBI. Sagan Osborne was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, Jake Young was 2-4 with an RBI, Jake Hignite was 2-3 with an RBI and Ryan Mitchell was 2-4 with an RBI. Jacob Cuch added a hit with two RBI while Tyler Czech added a double with an RBI. Jeff VanCleave recorded a hit with an RBI while Nathan Demarais added a single in the win.

Jon Koessl picked up the win in relief throwing two innings allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jason Thibault started the game throwing three innings allowing one run on two hits and Taylor Dantini picked up the save throwing two innings allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.

Game 6: DSU 17, Southern Vermont 0

The Blue Hawks offense picked up in game two of the double-header scoring 17 runs on 13 hits. The Blue Hawks scored in the first five innings with three in the first, five in the second and third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Jacob Hignite led the Blue Hawks going 3-4 with two doubles and five RBI's. Sagan Osborne and Ryan Mitchell were both 2-3 with a double and a pair of RBI's. Jeff VanCleave went 2-4 with two RBI's while Jake Young, Nathan Demarais and Jacob Cuch each had a hit and an RBI. Wacy Ortmann and Austin Tennant each recorded a hit in the win.

Sean Getchell picked up the win going five innings allowing no runs on one hit with six strikeouts while Cuch threw the final two innings allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

Game 7: Wayland Baptist (Received Votes- NAIA)  3, DSU 0

Wayland Baptist plated single runs in the second, third and sixth innings while holding the Blue Hawk hitters to one hit.

Sagan Osborne was the lone Blue Hawk hitter to record a hit in the game.

Gabriel Lizarraga took the loss going six innings allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Game 8: DSU 5, Wayland Baptist (Received Votes- NAIA) 2

The Blue Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the fourth and sixth innings. Wayland Baptist scored one run in the third and fifth inning but the Blue Hawks held on to get the victory 5-2.

Chad Mackay led the Blue Hawks going 2-2 with a double and an RBI while Jake Young went 2-3 with an RBI. Ryan Mitchell was 1-2 with a triple and an RBI while Nathan Demarais added a hit and an RBI. Jake Hignite and Tyler Czech each had a single in the win.

Joey Buchanan picked up the win going four innings allowing one run on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Taylor Dantini threw one inning allowing one run on one hit with three walks while Jon Koessl also threw one inning allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout. Josh Schuller came in to earn the save throwing one inning allowing no runs on no hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Game 9: Antelope Valley 9, DSU 0

Antelope Valley Scored two in the first, three in the second, one in the sixth and three in the seventh while collecting 16 hits and holding the Blue Hawks to two hits.

Jake Young and Jeff VanCleave recorded singles in the loss.

Josh Schuller took the loss going 5.2 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Jon Koessl threw 1.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Game 10: Antelope Valley 15, DSU 9

AV plated one run in the first and three in the second before scoring seven runs with two outs in the third inning. DSU scored on run in the fourth and fifth innings before AV plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth. DSU rallied to score five in the sixth and two in the seventh but fell to Antelope Valley 15-9.

Jacob Cuch was 2-3 with an RBI while Jeff VanCleave and Isaac Davis each had a double and an RBI. Ryan Mitchell had a hit and two RBI's.  Jake Young, Tyler Czech, Sagan Osborne and John Hollingsworth each recorded a hit and an RBI. Jake Hignite also recorded a hit in the loss.

Tony Roberts took the loss going two innings allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Travis Rowe threw 2/3 of an inning allowing seven runs on four hits with three walks and a homerun. Taylor Dantini threw 1/3 of an inning allowing one hit and one walk. Jason Thibault threw one inning allowing one hit and Jacob Cuch threw two innings allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Blue Hawks travel to the University of Mary on Wednesday for a double-header before starting conference play on Friday and Saturday against #5 Bellevue University in Omaha, NE.
