Blue Hawk Baseball Splits Final NSAA Series with Valley City State

VALLEY CITY, ND- The Dickinson State University Baseball team lost both games on Saturday (9-1, 8-5) to VCSU before winning both games on Sunday (8-7, 9-2) over the Vikings.

Game 1: VCSU 9, DSU 1

Valley City State plated one run in the first innings, five in the third and three in the eighth before the Blue Hawks got on the board in the ninth with one run but the Vikings won 9-1.

Jake Young led the Blue Hawks at the plate going 2-4 with a run scored. Dylan Skabo added a triple and Ryan Mitchell picked up the only other hit in the game for DSU.

Gabriel Lizarraga took the loss going eight innings allowing nine runs (5 earned) on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Game 2: VCSU 8, DSU 5

The Vikings plated two runs in the first while both teams scored a run in the second. VCSU would add two runs in the fourth while DSU would tie the game with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Vikings would score three runs in the eighth on a walk-off homerun by Joe Demers, beating the Blue Hawks 8-5.

Young would lead the Blue Hawk hitters going 2-3 with two RBI's. Jacob Hignite added a double and a run scored while Chad MacKay added a double. Jacob Cuch was 1-4 with an RBI, Jeff VanCleave was 4-1 with a run scored and Tyler Czech was 1-3 with a run scored.

Jason Thibault started the game on the mound for the Blue Hawks going 3.2 innings allowing five runs (4 earned) on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Joey Buchanan tossed two innings in relief allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Taylor Dantini took the loss going 1.1 innings allowing three runs on two hits with three walks.

Game 3: DSU 8, VCSU 7

After trailing by six runs after four innings, the Blue Hawks plated four runs in the fifth inning. The Vikings added a run in the fifth but DSU would score one in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to take game three by a score of 8-7.

VanCleave led the Blue Hawk hitters going 4-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI's while Dylan Skabo was 2-5 with a triple and two RBI's. Hignite, Czech, Mackay and Mitchell (2 RBI) each added two hits while Young added a single in the win.

Josh Schuller picked up the win going eight innings allowing seven runs (4 earned) on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Sean Getchell picked up the save going one inning allowing no runs on no hits with a strikeout.

Game 4: DSU 9, VCSU 2

VCSU would plate a run in the first inning but the Blue Hawks would tie it up in the third with a run then take the lead in the fourth with a run. The Vikings would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth but DSU would score two in the fifth, two in the sixth and three in the seventh to win game four by a score of 9-2.

Cuch was 3-4 with an RBI while Hignite was 2-4 with a homerun, a triple, three runs scored and three RBI's. John Hollingsworth added two hits and an RBI while Dylan Skabo was 1-5 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Osborne was 1-2 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Jake Young added a double and a run scored. VanCleave and Mitchell each added a hit and a run scored in the win.

Tony Roberts earned the win going seven innings allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

Dickinson State finishes their 2016 regular season with a 25-25 overall record and 12-10 in NSAA play.

The Blue Hawks will be the #4 seed in the 2016 NSAA Tournament and will play #5 Waldorf at 12:00 PM (CDT) in Valley City. Stay tuned for further tournament information to be released later this week.
