DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks opened practice for the 2014 season on Sunday (Aug. 10) at the Biesiot Activities Center.
Dickinson State will not only be competing in a new conference, but are under the direction of a new head coach. Pete Stanton was named the head coach following Hank Biesiot's retirement.
"During the first few weeks we are really stressing effort and attention to detail," Stanton said. "We have to be mentally sharp in our assignments and adjustments, and at the same time don't give them to much as we want them to fly around and play at a high level. Our main goal is to bring this team together as quickly as possible both on and off the field."
The Blue Hawks have a slew of new players entering the mix and vying for a position this season.
"The big thing with those freshmen players is to get them learning our system and getting familiar with it as soon as possible," an eager Stanton said. "We hope that many of our freshmen will be ready to contribute in the next few years. With a few of our transfer guys, it is a case of evaluating their strengths and where they will best fit into our team and schemes and hopefully they can come in and contribute and create competition in camp. "
Dickinson State made the transition out of the Frontier Conference and into the North Star Athletic Association on July 1, 2014.
"We are excited to be playing in the North Star. It is nice to be able to rekindle some of our old rivalries. It is a good fit geographically for both the University and our fans," said Stanton.
The Blue Hawks have a scrimmage scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 16), the time has yet to be announced.
