DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks fell in their opening game of the season to Rocky Mountain College on Saturday (Aug. 30), by a score of 40-21. Dickinson State is now 0-1 on the season, while the Battlin' Bears are 1-0.
The Blue Hawks fell behind 23-0 in the first quarter. Ryan Steska put the first points on the board with a 22-yard field goal for Rocky. On the next drive for the Battlin' Bears, quarterback Bryce Baker found Cole Cattelan on a 15-yard pass that put Rocky up by 10.
A fumble on the ensuing kickoff put Baker and company on the Blue Hawks' 19-yard line. Baker would run in for the score on the second play of the drive from 15 yards out. The next drive was more of the same for Rocky. Baker found Andre McCullouch on an 8-yard pass for the touchdown and a two-point conversion put the Bears up 23-0.
At the start of the second quarter, Dickinson State quarterback Kaler Ray found wide receiver Josh Borm open on the left side for a 35-yard touchdown pass. The Blue Hawk defense was able to shut down the Bears in the second quarter, forcing two punts and one missed field goal. With 1:23 left to play in the half, Ray found Seth Ewoniuk open for an 18-yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 23-14.
The Bears would add a field goal and touchdown to stretch their lead to 33-14 in the third quarter, before the Blue Hawks struck again. This time, Ray was able to find JT Keith on a 24-yard pass for the touchdown.
Rocky kept the Blue Hawks quiet in the fourth quarter and managed to pull in two interceptions.
Ray threw for 243 yards on 17 completions. Keith tallied five catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. Ewoniuk also picked up five catches. His receptions went for 74 yards and one touchdown. Borm's only reception was a 35-yard scoring play. Jesse Carney picked up 51 yards on eight carries.
Sam Herauf recorded two sacks for 21 yards, three solo tackles, and five tackle assists. Herauf was the Pizza Hut Player of the Game. Awa Poggi recorded six solo tackles and three assists. Robert Nalewaja picked up four solo tackles and four assists. Thomas Sease had one sack for seven yards, two solo tackles, and five assists. Matt McCoy also recorded one sack for a loss of 12 yards.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Sep. 6) when they travel to Montana State University-Northern. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
