Blue Hawks Victorious Over Waldorf, 27-23

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dickinson State picked up its first win of the season on Saturday (Sept. 13) against Waldorf College in a North Star Athletic Association contest.  The Blue Hawks came out on top 27-23.  Dickinson State is now 1-2 overall and 1-0 in North Star play.  Waldorf falls to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in North Star contests.

Awa Poggi intercepted a pass on Waldorf's opening drive and returned it to the Warrior's 5-yardline to set up a Jesse Carney rushing touchdown.  Josh Borm would later add a field goal to take a 9-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Warriors would battle back to take a 17-9 lead in the second quarter.  A pass from Kaler Ray was picked off by Cory Evans, which set up a 7-yard run by Emmanuel Osuchukwu.  Dustin Wilke added the point after touchdown and would later add a 22-yard field goal with 6:16 remaining in the half.  Waldorf quarterback Christopher Smith punched in a 2-yard run and Wilke's PAT made it 17-9, heading into the half.

The opening possession of the second half for Dickinson State ended in a touchdown.  Dalton Reid found the end zone on an 11-yard motion screen to bring the score to 17-15.  A failed two point conversion kept the Warriors on top. 

Smith would strike again for Waldorf, this time through the air.  He found Wayne Davis on a 21-yard pass to put the Warriors up 23-15.  A botched snap prevented the Warriors from adding the PAT. 

Myren Moore punched in an 8-yard touchdown run on the Blue Hawks' opening possession of the fourth quarter.  The Blue Hawks could not convert on the two point conversion and found themselves trailing 23-21.

Waldorf started to put a drive together following Dickinson State's touchdown.  The Warriors neared midfield, but the drive was halted when Matt Perdue recovered a fumble at the Blue Hawks' 49-yardline. 

The Blue Hawks would make the turnover hurt.  Moore once again found the end zone, punching in a 4-yard carry to put Dickinson State on top 27-23.

Waldorf drove down the field looking to reclaim the lead, landing themselves on the Blue Hawks' 1-yardline.  Smith tried to plunge into the promise land twice, but the Dickinson State front line held tight and prevented the Warriors from scoring. 

Smith finished with 255 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and 27 completions.  He also added a rushing touchdown.  Osuchukwu tallied 101 yards on the ground and one rushing touchdown.  Davis brought in nine passes and one touchdown.

Carney led the Blue Hawks' rushing game with 139 yards and one touchdown on just 11 carries.  Moore picked up 80 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns.  Ray finished 12-for-22, with 189 yards and one touchdown.

Robert Nalewaja and Perdue each recovered a fumble, Nalewaja also brought in an interception.  Poggi had one interception, which he ran back for 70 yards before being brought down on the 5-yardlne.

Dickinson State finished with 456 yards of total offense.  The Blue Hawks ran for 261 yards, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. 

Dickinson State will be back on the field Saturday (Sept. 20) for a North Star matchup.  The Blue Hawks will take on Valley City State University at home.
