VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Blue Hawks fell to the No. 22 Valley City State Vikings on Saturday (Oct. 18), 22-17. Dickinson State is now 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Vikings are 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Vikings jumped out to an early 13-0 lead on a pair of passing touchdowns from Kurtis Walls to Antoine Griffin, the first coming with 11:13 remaining in the first quarter.
The Blue Hawks would not go quietly into half time. Dickinson State utilized its rushing game for two touchdown drives of 76 and 75 yards. Jesse Carney put the Blue Hawks on the board with a 39-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 13-7. Josh Borm would convert a 28-yard field goal to make it 13-10. Kaler Ray would then find the end zone on a two-yard keeper to give the Blue Hawks a lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime, 17-13.
The Vikings were the only team to find the end zone in the second half. Walls found Zach Johnson on a 12-yard reception with 9:30 to play in the third quarter. Tomas Cortes would later add a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Walls finished 25 of 37 with 266 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Ian Keller rushed for 118 yards on 24 carries. Nick McBeain led the Vikings with 14 tackles and one sack.
The Blue Hawks recorded a plus-two in the turnover department. They forced two interceptions and recovered one fumble. Carney rushed for 126 yards and one touchdown on just 14 carries. Myren Moore picked up 68 yards on 13 carries. Alex Huitzil recorded 15 tackles and had one interception. Thomas Sease recorded 14 tackles and one sack for nine yards. Robert Sterling picked up an interception. William Schwindt forced and recovered a fumble.
Valley City State has a by next week and will travel to Mayville State on Nov. 1. The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host Mayville State. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
