DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State University football will host Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday (Oct. 25) when they host Mayville State University in a North Star Athletic Association game.
"Cancer affects everybody at some point either a personal battle or through family and friends," Head Football Coach Pete Stanton said, "We are using this day to represent and honor those who have been affected by cancer in one way or another. We wanted to keep the donations raised within the community that is why we are donating all of the money to Sherry's Wishes Foundation."
Sherry's Wishes is in honor and remembrance of those who are victims of Cancer. Sherry Mikkelsen (Kadrmas) who was a victim of Pancreatic Cancer and passed away in January 2000. She was born and raised in Dickinson, North Dakota. She was an energetic and fun loving person who impacted everyone she came across. Sherry's Family would like to start this nonprofit organization to promote health and raise money to help find solutions for those that face a similar situation.
Sherry's Wishes Foundation will select cancer related causes to donate all proceeds to give hope in finding solutions and/or comfort for those that have been impacted by cancer. The Founders of Sherry's Wishes are determined to make an impact and help those that support Cancer causes better understand where the proceeds from donations will be provided. The hope is that all proceeds will be making a positive impact for a clinical trial, new prescriptions, new treatment technology, and supporting families that are financial impacted from the disease.
Sherry's Wishes Foundation will be holding an annual 5K Walk/Run and will continue to evolve and add additional events to support and grow the foundation causes.
Dickinson State University football players will be donating $10.00 to wear pink during Saturday's game against Mayville State University. The Dickinson State University football coaching staff will match the donations from the players. Donation jars will be placed throughout the Biesiot Activities Center on during Saturday's game.
