DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks hosted Dakota State on Saturday (Nov. 8) for Senior Night. Dickinson State came away with an overtime 20-17 win. Dickinson State is now 6-4 overall and 4-1 in conference.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 19-yard run by Jesse Carney and Josh Borm added on the extra point. Dakota State was within scoring distance, but the Blue Hawks defense held and forced a field goal attempt. Tanner Hubbard missed the 41-yard field goal wide right.
The Trojans responded with a touchdown in the third on a keeper from quarterback Jacob Giles. Hubbard missed the extra point, preserving a lead for the Blue Hawks.
Carney found the end zone again, this time on a 28-yard run in the third quarter to give the Blue Hawks a 14-6 lead. Dakota State responded again, this time in the fourth quarter. Giles found Zach Ely on a 28-yard pass and Giles would convert on the two-point conversion to even the score.
Dakota State got the ball first in overtime and was forced to turn to their kicking unit. Hubbard converted on a 28-yard field goal to give the Trojans a 17-14 lead. Dickinson State took over for their first possession in overtime and gave the ball to Carney on the third play. He slashed to the right and found his way into the end zone to give the Blue Hawks a 20-17 victory.
Giles went 8-for-20 with an interception and a touchdown. Jeremy Christner picked up 84 yards on 25 carries. Ely had two receptions and one touchdown. Ben Kullos finished with 19 total tackles. Cole Potter recovered a fumble. The Trojans finished with 193 rushing yards and 105 yards through the air.
Carney was selected as the Pizza Hut Player of the Game with 164 yards on 18 carries. He finished with all three of the Blue Hawks' touchdowns. Kaler Ray finished 14-of-21 through the air for 74 yards. Austin Brown had four catches for 23 yards. Alex Huitzil had a team high 13 tackles. Sam Herauf brought down the quarterback once for a two-yard loss. Michael Thompson snatched a ball away from a receiver and returned it for 23 yards.
Dickinson State will play its final game on Saturday (Nov. 15) at Jamestown. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
