MILES CITY, MT- The Dickinson State University Football team dropped their season opener on Saturday to UM-Western, 29-13.
The Bulldogs then tied the game in the second quarter after Sam Rutherford ran in a touchdown from four yards out. The Bulldogs took the lead after the extra point to lead the Blue Hawks 7-6.
Rutherford again scored in the third quarter on a three yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 13-6 after a failed extra point and once again ran in a 10 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for a 20-6 Bulldog lead.
Austun Urlacher carried in a one yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 26-6. The final scoring for UM-Western came off a 22 yard field goal from Connor Greth to put the Bulldogs up 29-6.
The Blue Hawks answered late in the fourth quarter off a two yard touchdown run by Karsten Mack Jr. to put the score at 29-13 and this would be the final score of the ballgame.
Dickinson State finished the game with 12 first downs, 49 yards rushing, 169 yards passing for 218 total yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
UM-Western finished the game with 29 first downs, 247 yards rushing, 216 yards passing for a total of 463 yards with four touchdowns, a field goal and two interceptions.
Jed Fike led the Blue Hawk rushing offense with 47 yards on nine carries. Kaler Ray was 13-22 for 124 yards with one touchdown pass and an interception. Austin Brown led the Blue Hawk receivers with five catches for 70 yards.
The Blue Hawks are now 0-1 on the season and host Valley City State University this Saturday at the BAC in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 2:00 PM (MDT).
