MAYVILLE, ND- The Dickinson State University football team traveled Saturday to Mayville, ND to compete against the Mayville State University Comets in their last conference game of the 2016 regular season. The Blue Hawks entered the game with an overall record of 7-2, and a NSAA Conference record of 5-0.
The first quarter of the game started off slow for the Blue Hawks as they were forced to punt on their first two offensive possessions. After a defensive stop by DSU they would find the end zone on their third possession of the game. Quarterback Hayden Gibson found Seth Ewoniuk on a 19 yard touchdown pass to give the Blue Hawks a 6-0 lead with 5:21 left in the first quarter. Two plays later defensive back Cain Boschee intercepted MSU's Andrew Blake, giving DSU their first take away of the game. The Blue Hawk offense would score five plays later on a 22 yard completion from Gibson to Tray Boone. After a successful point after try by Cody Johnson the Blue Hawks led 13-0 with 2:00 left in the first quarter. On the next Comet offensive possession, Robert Sterling would intercept Blake, giving the Blue Hawk defensive their second interception. Four plays later Kaler Ray would carry the football into the end zone for DSU, on a 16 yard touchdown run. Another PAT from Johnson would give the Blue Hawks a 20-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Comets would score their first touchdown on the first possession of the second quarter. Andrew Blake would find Julian Delgado on a11 yard touchdown pass. After a successful two point after try the score would be 20-8 with 12:30 left in the second quarter. On the next DSU possession Gibson would be picked off by Rashod Thomas of MSU. After a Blue Hawk defensive stop, the DSU offense would get the ball back with 8:49 left in the second quarter. DSU would score five plays later on a Jed Fike 40 yard touchdown run. A successful extra point by Johnson would give DSU a 27-8 lead over the Comets. After a 14 play drive, Dondrel Hubbard would rush for a Comet 6 yard touchdown. A missed extra point by Guerrero would make the score 27-14 going into the half.
After defensive stops by both teams to start the second half, the Comets would find the end zone first. Jason Holmes would intercept Gibson and return it back for the first touchdown of the half. A good PAT by Guerrero would make the score 27-21 and would be the only scoring in the third quarter. DSU would lead MSU after three quarters 27-21.
Kaler Ray would rush for a 5 yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, giving the Blue Hawks a 34-21 lead after a successful PAT by Johnson. At the 8:00 mark of the fourth quarter DSU's Boone would score on 6 yard run. Johnson's good PAT would give the Blue Hawks a 41-21 lead over the Comets. After a defensive stand by the Blue Hawks they would get the ball with 3:00 left in the game. Mayville State University would score their last touchdown on a blocked punt with 40 seconds left in the game. DSU would end the contest leading 41-28.
Dickinson State finished the game with 26 first downs, 232 rushing yards, and 193 passing yards, for a total of 425 offensive yards.
Mayville State would finish with 23 first downs, 133 rushing yards, and 155 passing yards, for a total of 288 offensive yards.
Gibson was 14/26 passing with 158 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Dondrei Hubbard led the Comets with 98 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Andrew Blake was 14/37 passing with 130 yards, 2 interceptions and 1 touchdown.
Chris Mayes had 5 receptions for the Comets with 39 yards.
Jason Holmes led the Comet defense with 7 total tackles and 1 interception.
Dickinson State University football will travel to Jamestown, North Dakota on November 12th to compete against the Jimmies in their last game of the regular season. The game is scheduled for a 12:00 PM (MST) kickoff. This game is a non-conference game.
