Elijah Staton Named NSAA Defensive Player of the Week

MADISON, S.D. – The seventh edition of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Football Players-of-the-Week honors were announced by the conference office Monday.  Jacob Giles of Dakota State (S.D.) was selected to the Offensive Player-of-the-Week.  Elijah Staton of Dickinson State (N.D.) was picked as Defensive Player-of-the-Week.  Jaiden Mahuca of Presentation (S.D.) was chosen as Special Teams Player-of-the-Week.

NSAA Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Giles – Dakota State (S.D.) – 6'2" – 210 lbs., Senior – quarterback – Madison, S.D. – Giles finished the game by recording 18 passes in 25 attempts (72.0 percent completion rate) for 283 total yards in Dakota State's (S.D.) 59-20 North Star Athletic Association conference victory over Waldorf (Iowa).  He threw five touchdown passes (2-, 38-, 1-, 24- and 7-yards touchdown passes) and no interceptions in the game for the Trojans.  Giles had a total of 297 offensive yards in the game (283 passing yards, 14 rushing yards) and averaged 11.0 yards per play.      

NSAA Football Defensive Player of the Week
Elijah Staton – Dickinson State (N.D.) – 5'10" – 215 lbs., Junior – linebacker – Los Angeles, Calif. – Staton tallied 15 tackles in helping No. 21-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) to a 35-20 North Star conference victory over Valley City State (N.D.).  He recorded 3 solo tackles and 12 assist tackles in the game.  Staton also had 0.5 tackles-for-loss of 1.0 yard for the Blue Hawks.

NSAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Jaiden Machuca – Presentation (S.D.) – 5'10" – 155 lbs., Freshman – kicker – Parker, Colo. – Machuca was perfect 3-of-3 field goals and 5-for-5 PAT extra-point kicks in fueling Presentation (S.D.) to a 44-14 road victory at Mayville State (N.D.).  He made a 22-yard field goal in the first quarter, as well as the game-long 40-yard field goal and another 22-yard field goal in the second quarter.  Machuca had nine kick-offs for a total of 506 yards with four touchbacks.  He registered three punts for 85 total yards, with two of his punts going inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

Dakota State (S.D.) opened up a 14-0 lead over Waldorf (Iowa) in the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association Football Game-of-the-Week on Oct. 7 at Trojan Field.  The Trojans never looked back as they rolled past the Warriors by the score of 59-20.  DaSU outgained WU 564-392 in total offensive yards.  The Warriors committed two interceptions and two fumbles in the game.  Dakota State, receiving votes in the NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 5-2 and 3-1 conference record.  The Trojans earned the sole possession for second-place in the conference standings.  Waldorf is 4-3 overall record and 2-2 North Star conference record.

Presentation (S.D.) jumped to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter at Mayville State (N.D.) on Oct. 7.  The Saints outscored the Comets 28-0 in second and third quarters, cruising to a 44-14 North Star conference victory over the Comets.  PC racked up a total of 516 offensive yards compared to MSU 422 offensive yards.  MSU committed three turnovers in the game compared to PC one turnover.  Presentation is 3-3 overall record and 2-2 NSAA record, tying with Waldorf for third place in the North Star standings.  Mayville State remained winless in six games and 0-3 record in North Star conference games.

Dickinson State (N.D.), No. 21-ranked in the national poll, remained undefeated in the North Star conference play after a 35-20 victory over Valley City State (N.D.).  The Blue Hawks swept the season series meetings with the Vikings.  DiSU held a 13-7 lead by halftime and extended their lead to 28-13 in the third quarter.  VCSU could get no closer than 28-20 in the early fourth quarter, but DiSU scored a touchdown later in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.  Both Blue Hawks and Vikings were almost even in total offensive yards (DiSU 346 yards, VCSU 340 yards).  Dickinson State is 5-1 overall record and 4-0 record in North Star conference.  Valley City State fell to 2-4 overall record and 1-3 NSAA record.

Jamestown (N.D.) was idle last week.  The Jimmies are 1-5 overall record and 1-2 NSAA conference record.

Looking Ahead
This week's edition of the Dacotah Bank/North Star Athletic Association Football Game-of-the-Week takes place at the Swisher Field as Presentation (S.D.) returns home to host Jamestown (N.D.) on Saturday.  Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. in Aberdeen, S.D. as part of the Saints' homecoming football game.

No. 21-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.) remains home as they host Waldorf (Iowa) in the North Star conference action.  The game is set for 2 p.m. (Central Time)/1 p.m. (Mountain Time).  Also on Saturday, Mayville State (N.D.) travels to Valley City State (N.D.) for North Star contest at 1 p.m.

Dakota State (S.D.) will be idle this week and won't return back to action until Oct. 21 at Valley City State.
