Dickinson, ND – The season opener for the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks didn't go the way the Blue Hawks planned as they lost to Minot State University, 70-79.

"I thought we played great, there is a ton of stuff to build on," head coach Ty Orton said. "There's a lot we can take away from this game."

A wild first half with 10 lead changes showcased Minot State junior Thomas Korf who had 12 points and DSU junior Tevin Russell who knocked in 13 points.  With 13:12 to play Dickinson State had a four point lead, however the Beavers would take it away with scoring from Korf and senior E.J. Williams.  The Beavers led by three until senior Ty Ackelson hit a jumper with 20 seconds in the half to make the scorers 34-35 in favor of the Beavers.  The Blue Hawks went into the locker room after the first half trailing by just one point.

The lead would only change four times in the second half as the Beavers would work to control play.  A tight score kept the Blue Hawks hopes alive down to 40 seconds remaining before Minot was able to solidify their lead.

After scoring 12 in the first half, Korf was contained by the Blue Hawks defense.   He finished with 17 points, only five coming in the second half.  Senior Chris East chipped in 13 rebounds for the Beavers, a team high.  E.J. Williams totaled 14 points, while both Adam Randall and Samuel Johnson picked up 12.  Nathan Mertens added 11 of his own.  The Beavers ended with 35 rebounds, 29 fouls, and five steals.  They also had 35 points from the charity stripe.

The Blue Hawks were led by Tevin Russell who led the scoring with 24 points.  Ty Ackelsonbrought in 12 points for Dickinson State and DeSean Atkins had 10.  The Blue Hawk bench was a major factor, as they contributed 31 of DSU's 70 points.  Six different Blue Hawks had a steal, as the Hawks finished with 11.  Nearly every player for head coach Ty Orton had a rebound, with senior Isiah Thomas picking up seven.  Dickinson State finished with 30 rebounds, 14 assists, and 11 points from the charity stripe.  Overall, the Blue Hawks shot 45.5% from the field.

Dickinson State will look to rebound on Friday, November 1, when they play South Dakota School of Mines and Tech.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Scott Gymnasium.
