DICKINSON, N.D. – Junior guard Tevin Russell notched 28 points en route to a 95-89 victory over Rocky Mountain College on Saturday (Jan. 18) in a Frontier Conference matchup.
The Blue Hawks jumped out to a 10 point lead with 12:07 to play in the first half, but the Battlin' Bears were able to reconcile the difference six minutes later. Down by two with four seconds to go Tevin Russell drained a two to even things up at 44-44 heading into the locker rooms.
The beginning of the second half was more Dickinson State, as the Blue Hawks jumped to a seven point lead. Five minutes into the second half Matt Strickland put up a three to put Rocky ahead by one. With 14:11 to play Russell would make two free throws to give Dickinson State a one point advantage. Jeremey Nicolas would march down the court and put up a two to take back the lead. The see-saw battle would continue deep into the second half until juniorDeSean Atkins drove into the paint and put two points up for Dickinson State to tie things up at 84-84 with 3:34 to play.
The Blue Hawks decided enough was enough and did not look back. Atkins, Russell, and senior Ty Ackelson would seal the deal for Dickinson State in the last three minutes. To make matters worse for the Bears, their shooters went 2-for-4 from the free throw line and just 1-for-7 from the field in the last three and a half minutes.
Nicolas collected 39 points for Rocky Mountain, nearly half of his team's offensive production. He also collected a double-double with 13 points on top of his offense. Tyree Anderson tallied 15 points and seven assists. The Battlin' Bears finished with 37 rebounds, 17 assists, 10 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 41.
Russell's 28 points were a team high for Dickinson State, but he was followed closely by Ackelson who notched 24 points. Senior Brock Boos, junior Mackenson Odenier, andDeSean Atkins each picked up 11 points. The Blue Hawks finished with 38 rebounds, 12 assists, and a 52.6 shooting percentage.
Dickinson State will be back at home on January 25th when they take on Montana Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
