Valley City, ND – The Blue Hawks took to the court for their first regular season game since November 8. Dickinson State faced off against Valley City State University and picked up their first win of the season, 60-57. The Blue Hawks are now 1-3 on the season.
AJ McDonald and Russell Robinson led the way for the Vikings, but could not overcome the Blue Hawks. McDonald scored 14 points, while Robinson added 11. Valley City struggled shooting, as the team had a .322 shooting average combined. Jeff Romeus was strong off the bench for head coach Jeff Kaminsky, as Romeus chipped in nine of the 15 total points Vikings' subs put on the board. Overall, Valley City had 40 rebounds, including nine from Aaron Duske.
Dickinson State head coach Ty Orton has always coached his teams under a defensive mind set and it showed against Valley City. The Blue Hawks put pressure on the Vikings' shooters, forcing a 9-for-30 effort in the second half from Valley City.
Senior Ty Ackelson led the scoring for the Blue Hawks with 11 points. Junior centerMackenson Odenier continues to be a strong presence for Dickinson State, he added eight points of his own and had two blocks. The bench once again proved strong for Orton. Freshman Jacob Volk, senior Isiah Thomas, and freshman Sean Kelly each had eight points. Volk and Kelly each had a block a piece. The Blue Hawk bench chipped in 32 points, just over half of Dickinson State's total. Overall, Dickinson State pulled in 50 rebounds, 42 of which were defensive.
The Blue Hawks will look to keep the momentum going as they face the University of Jamestown on November 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
