Red(d) Hot Second Half Lifts Blue Hawks, 67-57

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks overcame a slow start against Montana Tech on Saturday (Nov. 1) to pick up their first win of the season, 67-57.  Dickinson State is now 1-4 on the season.

The Orediggers put up a 15-9 lead with 14 minutes to play in the first half.  The Blue Hawks offense then turned a corner after Curtis Redd took a pass from Connor Donaldson and drove underneath for two.  Roybell Baez cut the deficit to 15-13, before Montana Tech's Keegan McCarthy picked up two for the Diggers.  Not to be dissuaded, Connor Donaldson knocked down a long three to bring the Blue Hawks within one, 17-16, with 10:45 to play in the half. 

Wilson Alerte converted on a pair of free throws after being fouled by Reid Baerlocher, to give the Blue Hawks their first lead of the game at 18-17.  McCarthy then connected for two, but the Blue Hawks reclaimed a one-point lead on a three-point shot from Jacob Volk. The two teams battled back and forth, exchanging the lead until 4:29 remained in the first.

Adam Greger made two free throws for the Diggers to even the score at 32-32.  After Jeremy Samuelson converted a free throw, Liam Thomas picked up his first points of the game to give the Blue Hawks a 35-32 lead.  After a pair of free throws from Jacob Gondrezick, Greger and Antonio Snow each made a field goal to bring the score within one heading into the locker rooms, 37-36.

Neither team could find the scoreboard for the opening 4:15 of the second half.  The Orediggers reclaimed a lead just under the halfway mark in the second half.  Chase Haack made a three to put the Diggers up 50-45.  The Blue Hawks began their battle back with a pair of field goals from Redd.  Donaldson put the Blue Hawks up 53-52 with another three.  Dickinson State would not look back from there.  The Blue Hawks went on to outscore the Orediggers 14-5 in the final six minutes.

Greger finished with 16 points for the Diggers, while Snow added 14.  Haack put up 10.  Brandon Rydberg recorded a team high six rebounds.  The Diggers finished with 32 rebounds, 11 assists, eight steals, three blocks, and a shooting percentage of 34.5.

Redd finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and four steals.  Donaldson notched his first double-double of the season, picking up 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Volk came off the bench to score 13 for Dickinson State.  The Blue Hawks finished with 35 rebounds, 13 steals, and a shooting percentage of 40.4.

The win was Head Coach Justin Wetzel's first as a Blue Hawk.

Dickinson State will play at the University of Great Falls on Saturday (Nov. 8).  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
