DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks played host to Rocky Mountain College on Saturday (Nov. 29) in their final game of the 2014 Sam Milanovich Classic. The Battlin' Bears were able to top the Blue Hawks, 83-79. Dickinson State is now 4-7 on the season.
The Blue Hawks carved out a slim lead early in the first quarter, 22-13. The Bears responded by going on a 12-3 run to produce an even 25-25 score. A bucket by Connor Donaldson with 2:30 left in the half would even the score again at 29-29. Tevin Russell then knocked down a two to give the Blue Hawks a 31-29 lead with 1:40 to play. Malachi Roberts put up six points to give the Bears a 35-31 lead at half.
Donaldson made a three-point jump shot two minutes into the second to put Dickinson State up one, 39-38. The see-saw battle continued through much of the second half.
With nine minutes to play Mackenson Odenier cut the Blue Hawks deficit to one, 63-62, but Rob Nyby answered with a three to make the score 66-62. The Blue Hawks battled back to within two this time, but Zach Hinton's three forced the Bears' lead to five.
The Blue Hawks were able to cut the Bears' lead to three with 20 seconds remaining, but Sian Laine made a pair of free throws to put the Bears up 83-78. They would hang on for an 83-79 win.
Laine finished with a team high 27 points for the Bears. Roberts finished with 21. Hinton had a team high eight rebounds. Laine also had four steals. Tyree Anderson recorded seven rebounds. The Bears finished with 37 rebounds, 11 assists, 19 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 40.8.
Donaldson led the Blue Hawks with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Curtis Redd put up 13 points, while Jacob Gondrezick finished with 12. Odenier finished with 10 rebounds. The Blue Hawks finished with 48 rebounds, nine steals, one block, and a shooting percentage of 42.9.
Dickinson State will be back in action on Monday (Dec. 8) when they host Ogalala. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
