Blue Hawks Outshine Comets, 81-73

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks hosted their first North Star Athletic Association contest of the season on Wednesday (Jan. 21).  Dickinson State defeated Mayville State, 81-73.  Dickinson State is now 10-9 overall and 1-0 in NSAA action.  Mayville State falls to 12-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Dickinson State and Mayville combined for three three-pointers to open scoring, with Dickinson State leading 6-3.

The Blue Hawks pulled ahead 10-6 on a basket by Jeremy Samuelson, before the Comets went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the night at 11-10 with 14:48 on the clock. 

The Comets lost the lead only once, before relinquishing it with 5:43 to play.  With the score 24-21, Mackenson Odenier hit a two, then Jacob Gondrezick connected on a pair of threes to give the Blue Hawks a 29-24 lead.  Keeton Tucker then connected on two baskets after a turnover by Garek Droog and a missed three by A.B. Najee, to bring the score to 33-24.

Michael Lindsey was able to break the Blue Hawks 12-0 run, but Gondrezick connected on a basket to extend the lead to 35-26.  The Blue Hawks would hold on to the lead and head into the locker room with a 42-33 lead.

To start the second half Gondrezick connected on three of his first four shots, to bring the score to 50-38. 

A field goal by Najee with 10:50 left in regulation cut the Blue Hawks' lead to 57-55.  Dickinson State held off the Comets with baskets from Tevin Russell, Samuelson, Billy Engel, and a free throw by Jacob Gondrezick.  The Blue Hawks were able to keep at least a two-point lead until Jamal Branco drove into the lane for two and was able to draw a foul.  Branco converted on his free throw, cutting Dickinson State's lead to just one, 66-65.

On the next possession, Odenier converted a basket in the paint, but Lindsay also connected in the paint to keep the one point margin.

 Engel then nailed a three before David Olson missed a three of his own. The Blue Hawks drove down court and Gondrezick drew a foul and converted one of two from the line, to make the score 72-67.

With 2:44 remaining on the clock, Russell drained a trey to bring the lead 75-69.

Dickinson State would hold on to a six-point victory for the 81-73 victory.

Lindsay came off the bench for the Comets and scored 20 points. Olson recorded 12, while Branco finished with 11.  Chuck Robinson led the Comets with nine rebounds and three blocks.  Mayville State finished with 40 rebounds, 11 assists, four steals, four blocks, 21 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 47.7.

Gondrezick recorded a season high 25 points.  Russell recorded 21.  Engel came off the bench for 11.  Odenier recorded 10 points and a team high five rebounds.  Gondrezick also had three rebounds, four assists, and three steals.  Dickinson State finished with 27 rebounds, eight assists, 11 steals, one block, and a shooting percentage of 50.8.

The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 24) against North Star opponent Dakota State.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
