Blue Hawks Fall in Tight Game to Dakota State, 70-68

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks dropped a tightly contested battle against Dakota State on Saturday (Jan. 24), 70-68.  Dickinson State is now 9-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Half way through the first, Dickinson State led 15-12 after a Jacob Gondrezick field goal.  Taylor Zirbel responded for the Trjoans with a field goal of his own to cut the lead to 15-14.  Jeremy Samuelson then hit a three to put the Blue Hawks up 18-14.  The Trojans tied the game with 7:00 on the clock, on a field goal from Miguel Sansavour, 20-20.

The Trojans picked up their first lead, since the opening points, on a bucket by Bryant Allen.  Mackenson Odenier got underneath the Trojans' defense and was able to put up two points to even the score, 22-22, with 6:06 to play in the first.

After Odenier's basket, the Blue Hawks pulled ahead and remained there heading into the locker room.  Gondrezick hit a three, Tevin Russell recorded six straight points, and Wilson Alerte threw down a dunk to make the score 35-28.  The final points of the half were scored by Cameron Robinson, who hit a three as time expired cutting the score to 35-31.

The Blue Hawks battled it out in the start of the second half and claimed a twelve point lead with 13:40 to play in regulation, 53-41.

The Trojans notched a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 56-54 with 7:17 to play.  Russell converted two free throws and a mid-range jumper to give the Blue Hawks a 60-56 lead. Allen made a pair of free throws to cut the Blue Hawks lead to two, 60-58.  Alerte drained a jumper, but Zirbel answered with his own to keep the two-point gap.  Keeton Tucker took a pass from Russell on the next possession and knocked down a long three to extend the lead to five, at 65-60.

Derek Meger and Allen each made a field goal to bring the Trojans within one, 65-64.  Russell extended the lead back to three, but Meger responded.

With 2:37 remaining in regulation, Robinson gave the Trojans a one-point lead on a jumper, 68-67.  Odenier was fouled by Zirbel and evened the score with a free throw.

With a 68-68 score, Allen picked up a bucket to give the Trojans a two-point lead, 70-68.  Dakota State would hold on for the win.

Allen led the Trojans with 25 points.  Meger finished with 14 and led the team with nine rebounds.  Dakota State finished with 41 rebounds, six assists, six steals, 10 turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 44.8.

Russell led the Blue Hawks with 20 points.  Odenier recorded 14 points and a team high nine rebounds.  Connor Donaldson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Gondrezick notched 10 points and seven assists.  Dickinson State finished with 30 rebounds, 14 assists, seven steals, three blocks, and a shooting percentage of 46.4.

The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 28) at Jamestown.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
