DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks dismantled Valley City State on Wednesday (Feb. 11), 66-47. Dickinson State now moves to 10-14 overall and 2-5 in North Star action.
The Blue Hawks were able to snap a five-game skid with an outpouring of offense and solid defense against Valley City. After dropping a double overtime game against Mayville State, the Blue Hawks came back on Wednesday ready to play.
In the first half, Dickinson State shot 46.4 percent and netted 36 points. Defensively, the Blue Hawks held Valley City to a shooting percentage of just 18.5. The Vikings couldn't manage to get a three-point shot to fall in the first half.
The Vikings' frustrations were evident when Mac Kroeplin received a technical foul early in the first half. Valley City failed to break double-digits on the scoreboard until Briton Bussman hit a two with 2:22 remaining. By then, Valley City was already trailing 33-10.
Connor Donaldson scored the first two buckets for Dickinson State and he would not be finished. Donaldson finished the first half with 19 points, including 15 points from beyond the arc. He would finish with 32 points and eight rebounds.
The Vikings were able to put 35 points on the board in the second half, but Dickinson State still rumbled forward to a 19-point victory.
Jayden Ferguson led Valley with 13 points. Kropelin finished with 12. Ellwood Ellenson finished with nine rebounds. The Vikings totaled 31 rebounds, two assists, four steals, five blocks, nine turnovers, and a shooting percentage of 31.
Tevin Russell and Jacob Gondrezick finished with 12 points. Donaldson led with 32 and finished 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. Mackenson Odenier led the Blue Hawks with 10 rebounds and three blocks. Gondrezick added eight assists to his night. Dickinson State finished with 40 rebounds, 12 assists, three steals, three blocks, and a shooting percentage of 44.6.
The Blue Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 14) against Jamestown for Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
