Blue Hawks Fall to Marauders

DICKINSON, ND- The Dickinson State University Men's Basketball team fell Tuesday night to old rival the University of Mary Marauders in Scott Gymnasium, suffering their first loss of the young season.

The Blue Hawks found success in the paint early and often getting eight of their first 10 points from center Gilberto Shojgreen Jr. U-Mary responded with a balanced attack featuring seven scorers led by Domanta Henry who contributed 10 first half points. A Julian Vasquez three just prior to the end of the first half cut into the Marauders largest lead of the half and made the score 35-31.

U-Mary set the tone for a dominant second half by opening with a 10-0 run to push the lead to 45-31. The Blue Hawks eventually responded but were only able to trade baskets with the Marauders for a few possessions before U-Mary continued to pull away. The Marauders shot 50.9% from the field en route to an 88-66 victory.

Dickinson State's inability to overcome shooting woes proved costly. The Blue Hawks were 34.5 percent from the field and only 20.8% from beyond the arc. Vasquez led the way offensively for the Blue Hawks with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Shojgreen Jr. was the only other Blue Hawk to notch double figures with 12 points. As a team the Blue Hawks finished with 32 rebounds and 10 assists.

U-Mary got contributions throughout the lineup. Twelve Marauders scored in a game in which the bench contributed 42 points. Brandon Taylor led the Marauders with 13 points, followed closely behind by Bryan Jefferson and Damonta Henry with 12 points each. In all five Marauders reached double figures and the team won the rebounding battle with 40 boards while also collecting 10 assists.

The Blue Hawks will look to right the ship on Saturday November 7 when they travel to Montana State-Northern.
