Blue Hawk Men's Basketball Picked to Finish 4th in NSAA Men's Basketball Pre-Season Poll

MADISON, S.D. – The Dickinson State University Men's Basketball team has been chosen to finish fourth in the North Star Athletic Association, the coaches' preseason poll was announced Monday afternoon.

The Blue Hawks are coming off a 13-16 overall record last season and finished fifth in the NSAA with a 6-7 record.

Three teams – Dakota State, Bellevue (Neb.) and Valley City State (N.D.) – shared the NSAA's conference title last season.  All three teams qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament last season, with the Vikings advancing to the second round of the national tournament.

The Trojans won the NSAA Men's Basketball Postseason Conference Tournament for the second straight year, defeating Jamestown (N.D.) in the championship game last season.  Dakota State finished the season with a 19-14 overall record and 10-4 record in the North Star conference play.

Bellevue (Neb.) picked up the final remaining first-place votes, earning 72 points in the poll to finish second.  The Bruins were 20-12 overall record and 7-3 NSAA conference record in 2015-16.

Jamestown (N.D.) finished third in the poll with 57 points.  Dickinson State (N.D.) edged Valley City State 48-47 for the fourth spot in the poll.  Waldorf (Iowa) was sixth with 38 points, followed by Viterbo (Wis.) seventh with 26 points, Presentation (S.D.) eighth with 24 points and Mayville State (N.D.) ninth with 17 points.

Points are awarded on a 9-1 basis and coaches could vote for their own team.

The NSAA conference season gets underway on Dec. 2 with Dickinson State traveling to Jamestown, Viterbo hosting Bellevue and Dakota State visiting Presentation.  Waldorf will play their first conference game on Dec. 3 at Viterbo.  On the same night, Mayville State is scheduled to play their first conference game versus Dickinson State.  Valley City State won't play their first NSAA game against Dakota State on Dec. 9.

Each NSAA member will be play a total of 16 conference game, playing eight home games and eight road games during the conference season.

The NSAA's tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. on March 8-14, 2016.
