DICKINSON, N.D. – Viterbo University (Wisc.) took the long trip to Dickinson to take on the Blue Hawks in basketball Friday night. Viterbo takes on the Blue Hawks for their second NSAA matchup, losing to Bellevue last weekend. For the Blue Hawks the game comes as their third, beating Valley City and losing to Waldorf in the previous weekend.
The Blue Hawks came out strong in the first half, establishing a 25-9 lead over Viterbo. The Blue Hawks were lead by Marcus White with 10 points. The entire DSU team shot well throughout the half, 47% from the field and beyond the arch. The Blue Hawks got to the free-throw line only 2 times in the half.
The V-Hawks struggled from field, only 37% from the field. But, with some good defense down the stretch and 10 first half points from Cody Hoeth the V-Hawks were able to chip away and cut the Blue Hawks lead to 38-26 at halftime.
Into the second half, the Blue Hawks expanded their lead to 20 over Viterbo. From then on the Blue Hawks were able to cruise. The Blue Hawks were lead offensively by Marcus White with 16 points. Ryan Clark tallied another double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. That effort was enough for a 78-53.
Viterbo had two players with 10, Cody Hoeth and Cade Anderson. The V-Hawk's 19 turnovers and allowing the Blue Hawks shoot 50% from the field did them in.
The defensive effort is the Blue Hawk program's first time holding a conference opponent under 60 points since January 8, 2011 against Dakota State, under the direction of Ty Orton.
