DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State held its annual Blue Hawk Stampede on Friday (May 9) and Saturday (May 10). The rain would not stop the competition, as Iowa Central Community College recorded 810 points for a victory on the men's side. Dickinson State's men's team finished second with 540 points. The women captured a victory with a total of 400 points, beating out Black Hills State (330). Bobbi Grann won the women's All-Around title.
Jordan Pelton put up 67 points in his first round of bareback riding, before collecting a 75 point ride in the short round. Pelton notched 160 total points.
Dalton Rixen won both the first and second round in saddle bronc riding. He recorded a 74 point ride in the long go and a 55 point ride in the short round. Rixen's efforts notched 180 points.
Cameron Morman earned 30 points in steer wrestling, taking his steer down in 6.5 seconds in the long round.
Cody Hilzendeger once again paired with Samantha Jorgenrson (Black Hills State) to earn 170 points in team roping with a time of 18.2 seconds, netting them first in the event.
On the women's side, Jordyn Schaefer placed fifth in breakaway roping. Afton Wznick placed ninth in breakaway roping.
A three-way tie in goat roping made things interesting. Grann, Skye Schaper, and Black Hills State competitor Tearnee Nelson each posted a time of nine seconds. Schaper would claim third in the average by posting a 9.1 in the short round. Grann notched a 9.2 and claimed fourth. Schaper picked up 90 points, while Grann earned 65.
Grann placed first in barrel racing with a final time of 32.05 seconds. She posted 15.93 in the long go, before going 16.02 in the short go. Michaela Kathrein split seventh in the long go with a time of 16.55 seconds, before placing sixth in the short round. She posted a time of 16.64 seconds in the short round.
The Blue Hawks will now prepare for the CNFR, located in Casper, Wyo., in June.
