River Falls, WI - The Blue Hawk Men's Rodeo Team came out with a bang at the first college rodeo of the season. They won the rodeo with 440 points, topping second-place Black Hills State University with 370 points and Iowa Central Community College in third place with 295 points.
Leading the team was the three rough stock riders, who all rode for first. Lane Berg, a sophomore, not only rode both bulls to win the bull riding, but also placed in the steer wrestling to claim the men's all-around title for the weekend. Berg scored a 71 in the long round of the bulls and a 77 in the short round to capture the title. In the steer wrestling, Berg threw his steer in 8.4, placing him 6th in the round. Unfortunately, in the short round Berg drew a runner and was unable to earn a time.
Fellow roughie Tate Schwagler of Mandan made two outstanding rides in the bareback riding to also claim the title. Schwagler rode his first horse for a 76 to place third in the long round. He came back in the short go to even better his score with an 80 and take the championship home.
Rookie rider Jordan Hunt followed the trend of taking home first in the saddle bronc riding. Hunt scored a 63 in long go to be the only qualified rider. In the short round, Hunt drew a bucker that gave him a few dirty moves and was unable to hang on. Hunt won the average since no other bronc rider rode the entire weekend.
The Hawks will travel to North Platte, NE, September 16-17.
