DICKINSON, ND- Tim Daniel, Dickinson State University Athletic Director, is pleased to announce Christopher Creal has been named the new Head Track and Field coach at Dickinson State University.
“During my time as both an athlete as well as a coach within the NAIA, I had the opportunity to learn and witness the rich success of the DSU track and field program,” said Creal. “I even saw DSU alumni Derrick Atkins and Aaron Cleare get inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Basically my time around the sport had made Dickinson State University Track and Field a household name to me. Once I saw that the position had opened up at Dickinson State, I knew it was an opportunity not to pass up.”
Creal began his coaching career as a student coach for Midland University while finishing his studies in the Spring of 2011. At Midland, he worked closely with the programs sprinters and helped develop a NAIA 200 meter indoor national qualifier as well as a Great Plains Athletic Conference Outdoor 200 meter Champion.
After graduating from Midland, Chris accepted the Graduate Assistant Track and Cross Country Coach at Dakota Wesleyan University and worked closely with the middle distance and distance runners of the program from 2011 to 2013. He then took the Assistant Cross Country/ Track and Field Coach at Iowa Western in the summer of 2013. At Iowa Western, he primarily worked with the middle distance and distance program but would also assist the hurdles and multi-events groups when needed.
“I look to keep the tradition of success going here at DSU,” noted Creal. “I look to foster a team dynamic that strives for bringing home conference and national honors and awards to even personal accomplishments they (the student-athletes) set for themselves. Most importantly, I aim to guide these young men and women to be athletically, academically, and socially prepared to be successful during their time here at DSU as well as in their own future.”
Creal started his college career at Dana College and competed in both Cross Country and Track for the Vikings until the school closed. He then attended Dakota Wesleyan University to finish his career with the cross country program.
At Dana, Creal ran just about everything from the 4x400 meter relay up to the Half Marathon and did whatever he could do to help out the team. By the time he ended his career, Creal was a 2x NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete in cross country and 1x NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete in track.
“We are very excited that Chris has decided to become our Head Track and Field Coach here at DSU,” said Tim Daniel. “He has an impressive playing and coaching career and we are excited to see where he takes our Track and Field program.”
Creal earned his Master’s Degree at Dakota Wesleyan University in Educational Policy and Administration.
In addition to being the Head Track and Field coach, Creal will also be an assistant Cross Country coach as well as a professor in the Health and Physical Education department.
