Yankton, SD -- Dante Carter finished atop the board at the Mount Marty Invitational on Saturday, October 26. Carter finished with a time of 25:24.40 and averaged 5:06.7 a mile. "Dante Carteris turning into one of the top cross country runners in the NAIA," said Mike Nekuda. "He's proven that he's one of the top track and field athletes and now is doing the same in cross country. I'm really proud of him." The Blue Hawks took second overall with 67 points, a total time of 2:11:26.07, and an average final of 26:17.22. Three DSU runners placed in the top 20.
"Our guys had a great day beating two ranked teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference." Head Coach Mike Nekuda said, "We drove ten hours down into their part of the country and beat them. I have to give our guys a lot of credit for that."
The two ranked teams that Nekuda referred to are #18 Morningside College and #24 Dordt College. Dordt finished third overall, while Morningside finished fourth.
Two DSU runners other than Carter placed in the top 20. Senior Denis Patrick finished fifth with a total time of 25:56.99, with an average of 5:13.3 a mile. Senior Dustin Sandbak also finished within the top 20. Sandbak totaled 26:28.57 and averaged 5:19.6 a mile, good for 19th.
Freshman Riley Malcolm finished just outside the top 20. With a final time of 26:37.03, he finished 22nd overall.
Freshman Meleah Leiss finished 34th for the women. The Blue Hawks finished 11th out of 12 teams with 312 points and a total time of 1:54:00.02. DSU averaged 22:48.01 per runner.
Meleah Leiss finished with a time of 20:04.69, while she averaged 6:27.8 per mile. JuniorStormie Sickler finished 64th with a finals time of 20:56.80. She averaged 6:44.6.
Freshman Shayna Tonderum finished at 104 and freshman Camile Ness finished at 109. Freshman Shelby Stagner finished at 128.
The next meet for the Blue Hawks will be on November 8 in Lewiston, ID. Dickinson State will compete for the Frontier Conference Championship.
