DICKINSON, N.D.- The Blue Hawk women's and men's cross-country teams are traveling to Vancouver, Washington to compete in the NAIA Cross Country Championships Saturday.
The races will be held at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The men's race will begin at 11:30 MST and the women's run will follow at 12:30 MST. The two teams qualify through winning the North Star Athletic Association conference race, which was held on November 3 in Jamestown, North Dakota.
This will be the third consecutive National Championship appearance for both of the teams. In the 2015 races, the men's team finished 30th competing and the women 34th, each in a field of 35 teams. In the 2016 season, the men again finished 31st, the women 29th out of the 35 teams competing.
The men's team has six team members that have competed in the NAIA Championships in the previous appearances. Junior, from Twin Bridges, Montana, Tristen Guillot is the only men's team member to compete in all three of National Championship appearances.
The women's team returns two competitors with experience at the NAIA Championships. Brittney Grove, a Junior from Billings, Montana, is the only Blue Hawk returning for the third time on the women's side.
The 2017 season is Shayne Wittkopp's first year as head coach of the cross-country teams. Wittkopp was named North Star Athletic Association Men's and Women's Cross-Country Coach of the Year.
