Trojans fail to stop Blue Hawks

MADISON, S.D. – The Blue swept a tripleheader against Dakota State University on Saturday (Apr. 12) with scores of 5-0, 7-3, and 9-1.  Dickinson State is now 22-12 on the season and 8-1 in North Star play.

In game one the Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the third.  Alex Vargas doubled and drove home Kailey Olcott and Rebecca Lopez to give Dickinson State a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Hawks struck again in the fifth.  Vargas singled to score Justeena Gutierrez and Lopez, extending the lead to 4-0. 

Olcott ripped a solo homerun in the top of the sixth to bring the lead to 5-0. 

Vargas had two hits and four RBIs.  Olcott had one homerun and a run driven in. Regan Lawrence tossed a shutout and allowed just four hits.

In game two the third inning some both teams score.

Lindsey Sullivan grounded out, but drove home Lopez to give the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans retaliated in the bottom of the inning on a fielder's choice to even the score at 1-1.

In the top of the fourth inning Janell LaRont led off with a single.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lawrence.  Tiffany Morgan grounded out and moved LaRont to third.  LaRont would score on a passed ball to give Dickinson State a 2-1 lead.

 Elizabeth Rubalcava led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and was singled home by Brittany Hill to even the score at 2-2.

The Blue Hawks exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth.  LaRont reached on a walk and was replaced by Morgan Glowa.  Glowa scored on a double by Lawrence.  Gutierrez tripled to right-center and drove home Lawrence.  Lopez then singled to score Gutierrez.  Monique Yslasfollowed her with a double to drive in Lopez.  Vargas then traded places with Lopez on a double to extend the lead to 7-2.

The Trojans were able to add one in the bottom half, but it was not enough.

Morgan notched her third win of the season, going 5.2 innings.  She allowed three runs on six hits.  Lopez and Yslas each had two hits and a run batted in.  Vargas was 3-for-3 with a RBI.  Sullivan, Lawrence, and Guiterrez each batted a run in.

The Blue Hawks struck early and often in the third game. 

Sullivan drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly.  Lawrence then smashed a two-run homerun to center to give the Blue Hawks a 3-0 lead.

In the second Grayson tripled and was driven in on a single by Gutierrez.  Lopez drove her in with a single.  The Blue Hawks led 5-0 after one and a half innings. 

Dakota State tallied their first run in the second on a single by Kelli Heiser.

With one out in the top of the third inning Lawrence roped a triple to center.  LaRont drove her in with a single to center field.  Gutierrez would triple to drive home both LaRont and Grayson. 

In the top of the sixth the Blue Hawks' bats went back to work.  Lawrence drove home Glowa with a double to deep center field, giving Dickinson State the 9-1 advantage. 

Lawrence drove in three runs in the third game.  Lawrence pitched a complete game, going six innings.  She allowed one run (unearned) on seven hits.  Lopez, Vargas, and Gutierrez each recorded two hits. 

Dickinson State will take the field once again on April 15, when they host the University of Jamestown in a North Star Athletic Association doubleheader.
