Blue Hawks take two wins in Tucson

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Blue Hawks picked up two wins on Monday (Mar. 17) over Tabor College and Mt. Marty.  Dickinson State won 2-1 over Tabor and 9-1 over Mt. Marty.  The Blue Hawks are now 7-5 on the season.

Against Tabor, Dickinson State scored both its runs in the first inning.  Janell LaRont singled with two outs to start the rally.  Rebecca Lopez then doubled to right, which pushed LaRont to third.  Alex Vargas then laced a triple to score both Lopez and LaRont, giving the Blue Hawks a 2-0 lead.

That was all the offense Dickinson State would need. LaRont went the distance, allowing just five hits over seven innings.  She struck out 10 hitters.  Justeena Gutierrez, Laront, Lopez, Vargas, Lindsey Sullivan, and Brianna Grayson each had a hit.  Vargas had the only two RBIs.

The Blue Hawks' offense was alive against Mt. Marty, including a five run fourth inning.

In the bottom of the first Monique Yslas drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on an errant throw, and would score on a ground out by Gutierrez.

Dickinson State struck again in the second.  LaRont drew a walk and stole second.  Lopez drove her home, giving Dickinson State a 2-0 lead.

The fourth inning was kind to the Blue Hawks.  Yslas reached on a walk with one out.  She then stole second.  Gutierrez tripled to center field, scoring Yslas.  Following a strikeout, Lopez singled to left and drove home Gutierrez.  Vargas singled to put runners on the corners, before stealing second.  Sullivan singled up the middle to drive in both Lopez and Vargas.  Sam Bessey came on to run for Sullivan and was driven home on a single by Shelby Ries.

Mt. Marty would score once in the fifth, but it would not be enough.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Dickinson State added two more runs to win 9-1.  Lopez tripled to drive home Gutierrez, which was followed by a single from Vargas to score Lopez.

Tiffany Morgan went 4.1 innings and allowed one run on three hits.  She struck out three hitters.  Lopez went 3-for-4, with two runs scored and three driven in.  Vargas was 2-for-2, with one RBI.  Kailey Olcott also picked up a pair of hits.

Dickinson State will be back on the field Wednesday (Mar. 19) when they play Southwestern and Huntington.
