DICKINSON, N.D. – Regan Lawrence picked up a pair of wins as the Blue Hawks swept the Jimmies in a doubleheader on Tuesday (Apr. 15) with scores of 4-1 and 3-2. Dickinson State improves to 24-12 overall on the season. Against North Star opponents the Blue Hawks are now 10-1.
In game one Lawrence sent the first six Jimmies' hitters down in order. In the third Jamestown threatened, but could not get a run across and stranded a pair of runners.
The Blue Hawks struck first in the bottom of the third. Rebecca Lopez led off and reached on a dropped fly ball. Monique Yslas laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lopez to third. Alex Vargas singled up the middle to drive home Lopez and give Dickinson State a 1-0 lead.
Dickinson State's bats were once again active in the bottom of the fourth. Justeena Gutierrezdoubled to lead off and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by McKennzie Kenobbie. Lopez then singled to right and scored Gutierrez. Yslas reached on a dropped fly ball by Sarah Money. Lopez advanced to third. Lindsey Sullivan reached on a dropped pop up by Autumn Wang, scoring both Lopez and Yslas. Dickinson State took a 4-0 lead into the fifth.
The Jimmies plated their only run in the top of the sixth inning. Money walked and moved to second on a ground out. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on single by Hattie Fullmer, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Lawrence went the distance and surrendered just one run on three hits. She racked up 12 strikeouts. Lopez went 2-for-4 with and scored twice. She also drove in a run. Yslas scored a run. Vargas and Gutierrez each had a pair of hits, while Gutierrez scored a run.
Tiffany Morgan got the start in game two.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Yslas reached on a one out single. Vargas reached on a bobble by Breezi Cuffe. Sullivan grounded out, but advanced the runners to second and third. Grayson roped a single to right to score Yslas and Vargas for a 2-0 lead.
Both offenses were held until the Jimmies scored in the fifth. A two out double by Syd Greenlund started the Jimmies' rally. Connie Miller came on to run for Greenlund. Money drew a walk to put runners on both first and second. Brook Rheault singled to right to plate Miller. Money advanced to third and Rheault advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Lawrence came on in relief for the Blue Hawks with two outs and two on. An error by Sullivan allowed Money to score and tie the game at 2-2, but Rheault was tagged out at third as she tried to return.
In the bottom of the sixth Hanna Dunnigan hit Sullivan with a pitch to leadoff the inning. Sullian was lifted for pinch runner Morgan Glowa. Grayson reached on a fielder's choice and Glowa was retired at second. Lawrence roped a double to left and Grayson beat the throw to the plate to give the Blue Hawks a 3-2 lead.
Lawrence retired the Jimmies in order to seal the victory.
Morgan went 4.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Lawrence went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Ylas had a hit and a run. Grayson notched two RBIs on one hit. Lawrence also picked up a RBI on one hit. Morgan and Guttierez each had a hit.
The Blue Hawks will travel the Valley City State on Friday (Apr. 18) to play the Vikingss in Valley City.
