Blue Hawks fall twice to Doane

DICKINSON, N.D. – The Doane College Tigers swept the Blue Hawks on Monday (Mar. 10) in a doubleheader.  The Blue Hawks are now 0-4 overall.

Regan Lawrence took the circle for Dickinson State and faced off against Elizabeth Cast.

Lawrence went six innings and allowed five runs on 11 hits.  She struck out four hitters.

Doane would get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning.  Back to back singles led off the inning for the Tigers.  After a pop out Heather Ramirez stole second to put two runners in scoring position.  Sam Valadez sacrificed Doane's first run across.  The sacrifice moved Ramirez to third and she was driven home by a Kelsey Huenink single.  Doane led 2-1 after the first inning.

The Tigers got another run in the second when Whtiney Hinn singled home Harley Horner to give Doane a 3-1 advantage.

The Blue Hawks added one back in the top of the third on a solo round tripper from LaRont. 

Doane struck back with two more runs of their own.  Makae Moore led off the bottom of the third with a double and was chased home on a single by Sam Valdez.  Huenink would come around to score later in the inning on a single by Horner to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. 

The Blue Hawks would not go quietly.  Claudia Torres pinch hit for Shelby Ries and reached on an error to start the seventh.  McKenzie Kenobbie singled to center to put two runners on with no outs.  Justeena Gutierrez then singled to score Jenifer Huebner (pinch runner for Torres) to cut the deficit to one.  Dickinon State would tally once more when Monique Yslas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Huebner and a 5-4 final score.

In game two Dickinson State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first.  LaRont led off with a triple and scored on a two RBI single from Yslas.

Doane would strike back in the bottom of the second inning on a leadoff homer by Valadez.  With one out Moore would single and score later on a double from Morrow.  Bri Murdoch singled home Morrow for a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning Moore singled home pinch runner Kat Reimers.  Morrow reached on an error with runners on to plate Huenink and give Doane a 5-2 lead. 

The Tigers put two more on the board in the fourth.  Nichole Dias clubbed a RBI double and would come around to score on an error, giving Doane a 7-2 advantage.  Doane would get one more in the sixth to make it 8-2.

Dickinson State scored thrice in the seventh.  Vargas brought home two on a RBI double andLindsey Sullivan later drove in Vargas. 

LaRont was charged with the loss.  She went 3.2 innings and surrendered eight runs (five earned).  Vargas and Yslas each had two hits.  LaRont scored twice.  Vargas had four runs batted in.

Dickinson State will be back on the field on Friday (Mar. 14) when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to play Aquinas College and Robert Morris.
