Blue Hawks set to play San Marcos in Opening Round

CALDWELL, Idaho – The Blue Hawks are set to play their first game of the 2014 NAIA Opening Round against California State University – San Marcos.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The first-seeded Cougars enter the Opening Round with a 38-7-1 record.  On the round, San Marcos has only played 12 games and finished with a 9-3 record.  The Cougars are led by Mallory Campbell, who finished the regular season with a .389 batting average.  Three players finished with four homeruns.  Alex Miller led the Cougars with 43 runs driven in. 

Katie Wilkinson was the Cougars' go-to pitcher this season.  She collected a record of 21-5 and an ERA of 2.00, while striking out 67 hitters.  Ashley Dagenais picked up 18 starts for San Marcos.  She finished with a 13-2 record and an ERA of 1.08.  Dagenais recorded 57 strikeouts. 

Collectively, the Cougars hit .338 on the year.  They belted 18 homeruns and drove in 261 runs.  San Marcos' offense scored a total of 300 runs.  Opposing hitters finished with a .211 batting average against the Cougars' pitching staff.  The Cougars' staff finished with an ERA of 1.78 and 139 strikeouts.

Fourth-seeded Dickinson State was led offensively by a trio of hitters.  Alex Vargas led the Blue Hawks in batting average (.461), runs driven in (57), and tied for the team lead in homeruns with six.  Vargas also had a slugging percentage of .685.  She was selected as the NAIA Softball Unaffiliated NSAA/Frontier Player-of-the-Year. 

Lindsay Sullivan hit at a clip of .436, with six homeruns, and 54 runs driven in.  Sullivan was selected to the NAIA Softball Unaffiliated NSAA/Frontier First Team All-Conference.  Sullivan also recorded a team high in on-base percentage (.500).

Rebecca Lopez hit .420 for the Blue Hawks with three homeruns.  She drove in 36 runs and scored a team high 55.  Lopez was selected to the NAIA Softball Unaffiliated NSAA/Frontier First Team All-Conference.

In the circle, Regan Lawrence will look to remain dominate for Dickinson State.  The right-hander pitched in 26 games and finished with a record of 21-4.  She posted an earned run average of 1.76, while striking out 167 hitters.  Opposing hitters had a batting average of just .222 against Lawrence.
