DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State picked up a pair of wins on Thursday (Mar. 20) as they swept two games from the University of Antelope Valley. The Blue Hawks took game one 2-0, before taking game two 2-1. Dickinson State now has a 10-6 overall record.
Janell LaRont tossed a four hit shutout for the Blue Hawks, with six strikeouts.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the third inning. McKenzie Kenobbie led off with a walk and was followed by a base hit bunt from Justeena Gutierrez. Monique Yslas laid down a sacrifice for the inning's first out. Kailey Olcott ripped a double to left that brought home Kenobbie and gave Dickinson State a 1- lead.
Dickinson State would tally again in the bottom of the fifth. Once again it was Kenobbie who started things off. She laid down a base hit bunt and advanced to third on a wild throw. Kenobbie scored on a wild pitch.
Olcott, Kenobbie, Lindsey Sullivan, and Gutierrez each recorded a hit. Olcott had the lone run batted in, while Kenobbie scored both runs.
Regan Lawrence took to the circle in game two and threw eight innings of one out ball. She allowed just five hits, one unearned run, and sent eight hitters back to the dugout by way of a strikeout.
The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning. Kenobbie laced a leadoff single and then stole second. Yslas sacrificed Kenobbie over for the first out of the game. Kenobbie then scored on a wild pitch by Jasmine Lopez.
The pitcher's duel raged on until the bottom of the seventh inning. Alexandra Sanchez led off with a double for Antelope Valley, but was put tagged out on her way to third on Ruby Barroso's fielder's choice. Michelle Hartson followed up with a single. Lopez singled to center to bring home Barros and tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the eighth inning Olcott was placed at second, courtesy of the international tie breaker. She advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs Yslas walked to put runners on the corners. LaRont singled to center to bring home Olcott and give the Blue Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Chelsea Eli-Kido was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth. A sacrifice bunt Liliana Rivera advanced her to third. Maya Varela walked, putting runners on the corners. Lawrence buckled down and struck out Kiyanna Watley for the second out. She then forced Alexandra Sanchez to pop out to end the game.
Dickinson State will be back on the field Friday (Mar. 21) as they take on Avila University and Oklahoma Baptist University.
