DICKINSON, N.D. – Alex Vargas' three homerun day propped the Blue Hawks offense, as they strolled to two wins over Valley City State on Saturday (Apr. 19). Dickinson State put up 10 runs in the first inning of game one en route to an 11-1 victory. In game two the offense stayed hot in an 18-2 win. The Blue Hawks are now 28-12 on the season.
After Regan Lawrence set the Vikings down in order in the top of the first inning the Blue Hawks' offense struck for a massive number.
A one-out single by Monique Yslas gave way to a two-run homerun to center from Alex Vargasthat started the scoring. Lindsey Sullian singled, as did Brianna Grayson. Lawrence roped a double to left and brought home two runs, giving the Blue Hawks a 4-0 lead. Janell LaRontsingled to score Lawrence. After a pop-out, LaRont stole second. McKenzie Kenobbie then drew a walk. The lineup card turned over and Rebecca Lopez slapped a single to center to score LaRont. Lopez stole second to put runners on second and third. Yslas roped a single to right field, scoring both Kenobbie and Lopez. Vargas then singled and scored Yslas. Sullian was hit by a pitch. Grayson doubled to right and drove home Vargas to give the Blue Hawks a 10-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second a double by Lopez to score Kenobbie gave the Blue Hawks an 11-0 lead. Valley City scored their only run in the top of the fourth.
Lawrence went all five innings for Dickinson State, allowing just two hits. The only run she allowed was unearned. Vargas finished 2-for-3, with a homerun, two runs scored, and three runs driven in. Lopez, Yslas, and Lawrence each drove in a pair. The Blue Hawks combined for 14 hits, five different players had a pair of hits.
Game two was more of the same for Dickinson State's offense. In the bottom of the second inning the Blue Hawks pushed across the game's first runs. Lopez doubled to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vargas took an 0-2 pitch over the center field fence to give the Blue Hawks a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning Justeena Gutierrez doubled to right field with one out. Lopez drove her home with a two-out single, giving the Blue Hawks a 3-0 lead.
Vargas hit another shot in the bottom of the third to lead things off. Sullivan then doubled and Lawrence reached on a bunt single, advancing Sullivan to third. Lawrence was called out on an appeal after she left first early. Grayson tripled to drive home Sullivan. Gutierrez then laced a two-out double to score Grayson and give the Blue Hawks a 6-0 lead.
The Vikings picked up their only two runs in the top of the fourth.
Dickinson State exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. An error by Shayna Taffinder allowed both Lopez and Yslas to score. Grayson later singled to drive in Vargas andMorgan Glowa, who pinch ran for Sullivan. Tiffany Morgan roped a double to score Grayson. Gutierrez reached on an error and it allowed Sam Bessey to score, after she pinch ran for Morgan. Kailey Olcott pinch-hit for Kenobbie and reached on a walk. A bases loaded single by Yslas scored Gutierrez and Olcott. Vargas singled to score Lopez and push Yslas to third. Sullivan doubled to right and scored Yslas and Vargas. The Blue Hawks pushed across 12 runs in the fourth inning to take an 18-2 lead.
Morgan went 5 innings and allowed two runs, on four hits. Vargas and Sullivan each had four RBIs. Grayson drove in a trio of runs. Gutierrez and Yslas notched a pair of RBIs each. Lopez finished with four hits. The Blue Hawks finished with 18 hits.
Dickinson State will be back on the field Monday (Apr. 21) when they host Black Hills State University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
